Obituary
Blacksburg -- Martha Lucille Childers Neal, 90, of 102 West Ramseur Drive, passed away Monday, January 12, 2010, at her residence while surrounded by her family and special caregivers. Born on April 3, 1919 in York County to the late Benjamin Franklin Childers and Della Laura Hogue Childers, she spent most of her life in Cherokee County and was a devoted wife to Carl Franklin Neal for 53 years. "Lucy," to her many friends, was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church and the Gloria Bowen Sunday School Class. Mrs. Neal also sang in the First Baptist Church Sanctuary and Senior Adult Choirs and was a member of the Rosemary Book Club for many years. Mrs. Neal worked as an office nurse and technician for both Drs. T.A. Campbell, Sr. and Jr., and for Dr. Ladson DuBose until his retirement in 1990, but she never stopped caring for and helping others in any way she could. Mrs. Neal was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and aunt. She is survived by a daughter, Betty Neal DuBose and husband, Dr. Ladson L. DuBose, of the home and three grandchildren, Julia DuBose Smith and husband, Andrew, of York, L. Lawrence DuBose Jr., and wife, Susan, of Greenville, SC, and Neal Franklin DuBose and wife, Michelle, of Greensboro, NC. She was known and loved as "Nana" by her great-grandchildren Emily, Drew, and Laura Smith of York, Ladson DuBose, III of Greenville, SC, and Benjamin and Mason DuBose of Greensboro, NC. Also surviving Mrs. Neal is a brother, Grady Thomas Childers and wife, Dorothy, of Grover, NC, a sister, Ella Mae Moore of Greenville, SC, and some very special nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Neal was preceded in death by two brothers, Samuel Jackson Childers and Lester Childers, The family will receive friends Thursday, January 14, 2010, from 12:30 until 2 PM in the First Baptist Church Family Life Center. Funeral services will follow at 2 PM in the First Baptist Church with Rev. Scott Hammett and Dr. Wayne Brown officiating. Interment will follow in Mountain View Cemetery with Lawrence DuBose, Neal DuBose, Andrew Smith, Dr. Bill Childers, Jimmy Moore, and Charles Neal serving as pallbearers.
