Blacksburg -- Sara Lewis Westbrook Wilkins, 93, of Peachtree Centre, formerly of 101 Dixon Drive, Blacksburg, went home to be with the Lord on November14, 2010 Spartanburg Regional Medical center. A native of Cherokee County, she was born on June 24, 1917. She was the daughter of Robert Lewis Westbrook and Alice Elliott Westbrook and the last survivor of five children. She was the wife of the late Fred Simmons Wilkins, Sr. In addition to her parents, brothers and sisters and husband, she was preceded in death by her son, Don Lewis Wilkins. Mrs. Wilkins was a retired educator who began her teaching career after graduating from Winthrop College in 1938. Her first teaching position was at Belmont, North Carolina and she later taught at the following schools: Blacksburg High School, Blacksburg Grammar School, Grover Elementary School and West Elementary in Kings Mountain. She served as principal of Blacksburg Grammar School for several years. She was a devoted member of St. John’s United Methodist Church all of her adult life where she served faithfully on various committees and women’s circles. She is survived by her children: Fred Simmons Wilkins, Jr. (Rebecca) of Carlisle, SC, her daughter-in-law, Jane Bridges Wilkins, wife of the late Don Lewis Wilkins, of Blacksburg, SC, Suzanne Wilkins Wylie (Reginald) of Gaffney, SC, Alice Wilkins Phillips (Benny) of Gaffney, SC and William Stephen Wilkins (Harriet) of York, SC. Also surviving are 11 grandchildren: Clint S. Wilkins (Lisa) of Dallas, TX, Meg Wilkins (fiance′ Maxey Carroll) of Charleston, SC, Jill Wilkins Strawn (Chad) of Florence, SC, Brad Lewis Wilkins (Roxanne) of Gaffney, SC, Karen Wylie Earp (Brett) of Roswell, GA, Jamie Wylie (Tracy) of Gaffney, SC, Sam Hogue (Angela) of Lugoff, SC, Grady Hogue (Erin) of Blacksburg, SC, Kelly Phillips of Gaffney, SC, Katy Wilkins of Mt. Pleasant, SC, and Bill Wilkins, Jr. (Ashley) of Boiling Springs, SC. Also surviving are 15 great-grandchildren: James and Caroline Wilkins, Alex and Emily Strawn, Bradon and Ansley Wilkins, Catherine and Benson Earp, Austin Wylie, Morgan, Preston and Sara Hogue, Emma Hogue, Simms and Brooks Wilkins. The family will receive friends on at St. John’s United Methodist Church, Blacksburg, SC, on Wednesday, November 17, 2010, from 2:00 – 3:00 pm. The service will follow at 3:00 pm with the Rev. Don Boshell and Rev. Anne Parrott presiding. The committal will follow at Mountain View Cemetery in Blacksburg. Pallbearers will be grandsons of Mrs. Wilkins: Clint Wilkins, Brad Wilkins, Jamie Wylie, Sam Hogue, Grady Hogue, Kelly Phillips and Bill Wilkins, Jr. The family will be at their respective homes.
