Carol (Kit) Lyons, a resident of Sandpiper Nursing Home, Mt. Pleasant, SC, died June 7, 2011.
Kit was born December 17, 1927, in Providence, RI, the daughter of Harold and Gladys Carr. She was a graduate of the University of Maine with a major in theatre.
Prior to moving to Charleston in 1961, Ms. Lyons taught theatre in Buffalo and East Aurora, NY. In Charleston, Kit was co-founder and co-director, with Dorothy D’Anna, of the Little Theatre School in the Dock Street Theatre and was co-director and costume designer for 25 years for the Theatre for Children at the Footlight Players Workshop. She was also an instructor and corresponding secretary for the Charleston Dog Training Club, and at one time, a member of the Fancy Free Cloggers. Her final position was manager of the Footlight Players.
Through the years, Ms. Lyons was recognized as one of Charleston’s most talented and versatile actresses, entertaining audiences in drama, modern comedy, farce, mystery, and musicals, her favorite. She could belt out a song in a glorious voice.
Kit is survived by her longtime collaborator in the world of theatre, Dorothy D’Anna, and many friends.
A memorial service to celebrate Kit’s life will be held at 4:00 p.m., Wednesday, June 29, 2011, at the Footlight Players Theatre, 20 Queen Street, Charleston, SC.
