Jerry Melton Peebles, 92, husband of the late Jean Lybrand Peebles, entered into eternal rest on September 15, 2017 at home in Sparta, NC. Born, December 5, 1924, in Lucknow, S.C., he was the son of the late Edward Fulton Peebles and Lilly Mae Hall Peebles. Jerry grew up in Lucknow, SC where he joined the South Carolina Highway Patrol in 1948, retiring in 1988 at the rank of Lieutenant. After marrying Jean in August 1950, they moved to Sumter where they lived for 50 years at 1134 Oswego Road. Jerry was a member of St. John United Methodist Church, Lucknow Masonic Lodge #212, Claremont Masonic Lodge #64, Sumter York Rite Bodies, Omar Shrine and the South Carolina Troopers Association,, holding numerous local offices. He was currently residing in Sparta, NC. He is survived by three sons, James W. Whitley (Kim) of Apollo Beach, Florida, John M. Whitley (Kathy) of Lubbock, Texas, and George A. Peebles (Maria) of Sparta, North Carolina; one niece, Peggy Lybrand Jenerette (Wayne) of Rutherfordton, North Carolina; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, September 23, 2017 in the Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Gene Mosier and the Rev. Larry Brown officiating. Burial, with Masonic Rites, will be in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m. Saturday at Elmore-Cannon- Stephens Funeral Home. Memorials can be made to the Claremont Masonic Lodge #64, 215 Alice Drive, Sumter, SC 29150 or to St. John United Methodist Church, 136 Poinsett Dr., Sumter, SC 29150.
