Lewis Powell

Lewis A. “Louie” Powell, Sr, 89, of Pinewood, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 16, 2017, at his home in Pinewood, SC. Born in Danville, VA, he was a son of the late Jasper Carl “J.C.” Powell, Sr. and the late Kitty Viola Degarhart Powell. He was a member of First Pentecostal Holiness Church in Sumter and in his later years attended Bethesda Church of God and Pinewood Baptist Church. He was a proud veteran of the U.S. Navy and Navy Reserves from 1946-1955. He was employed by Williams Furniture/Georgia Pacific from 1944 to 1990 having slightly over 46 years of service. He served in several capacities of management, mostly Payroll/Personnel Management. In 1978-1979, he served as the President of the Sumter Area Personnel Association. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Annie Stanfield Powell; and siblings, J.C. Powell, Jr., Daniel T. Powell, and Margaret Price. Survivors include his three children, Patricia Kirby (Joe) of Sumter, and L.A. Powell, Jr. (Kathy) and Michele Brunson (Matt) both of Pinewood; grandchildren, April Glover, Andrea Fulk, Starr Jordan, Aaron Feldman, Sarah Wilkes, Ashley Lamb, and Hunter Brunson; 13 great-grandchildren; siblings, Dorothy Hickson and Clara Brink both of Bishopville, Celestine Mims and Hilda Krieger both of Sumter, John Powell of Florence, Beatrice Lamkin of Jonesboro, AR, and George Powell of Columbia. Funeral services will be held at 3 P.M. Thursday, July 20, 2017, in the Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Kirk Carlisle of Pinewood Baptist Church officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Chris Glover, Paul Fulk, Trent Wilkes, Aaron Feldman, Hunter Brunson, and Jimmy Lamb, Jr. The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 P.M. Thursday, July 20, 2017, at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and other times at the home of L.A. and Kathy Powell, 2485 West Avenue South, Pinewood, SC. Memorials may be made to Pinewood Baptist Church Playground Fund, PO Box 176, Pinewood, SC 29125-0176 or to Bethesda Church of God Youth Program, 2730 Broad St., Sumter, SC 29150. The family would like to express their appreciation to longtime caregivers, Trevia Griffin and Camilla “Bertha” Briggs who cared for both Momma and Daddy. In addition, a special thanks to Wendy Felder of Carolina Caregivers and her wonderful staff who all cared for him with the utmost love and compassion. Also, the entire staff of Amedisys Hospice and Tuomey Infusion Center for their care and compassion. The family would also like to especially thank his nurse, Michele Baker, RN, and aid, Mercedes Williams, CNA. Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and Crematorium of Sumter is in charge of the arrangements.
