Mary Epting Obituary

Mary Anne Duren Epting, 86, widow of Gene Burgess Epting, died Saturday, October 21, 2017 at Covenant Place. Born August 13, 1931 in Lancaster, she was a daughter of the late James Opher Duren and the late Margaret Ellen Bailey Duren. Mrs. Epting was a member of St. Michael’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Irmo. She was a graduate of Winthrop College and retired school teacher having taught elementary education in Charleston, Sumter, and Irmo. Survivors include five nieces, Jane Chapman Winch of Camden, Becky Epting Williams (Burnet), Judy Epting Shuping, Marlene Epting Lee (Jim), and Jeannie Epting Ward (Charles) all of Sumter; three nephews, John W. Chapman, Jr. (Nita) of St. Louis. MO, Randy B. Epting (Lanie) of Columbia, and John T. Epting (Tracy) of Washington, D.C.; and a number of great nieces and great nephews. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Cudworth Alwyn Wittschen; her brother, James Hall Duren; her sister, Margaret Duren Chapman. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in the St. Michael’s Evangelical Lutheran Church Cemetery with the Rev. Frank W. Anderson officiating. The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the loving caregivers at Covenant Place, Caris Healthcare and Angelica Robinson for the excellent care they have provided. Memorials may be made to St. Michael’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 400 River Road, Irmo, SC 29212. Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and Crematorium of Sumter is in charge of the arrangements.
