Dennis (Denny) Ray Halvorson, 56, of Irene, SD passed away Wednesday, September 25, 2013 at Freeman Medical Center in Freeman, SD. Dennis was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in October of 2012 and with strength and determination was able to spend the last year of his life with friends and family enjoying many of the activities he loved. Dennis was born December 30, 1956 in Viborg, SD to Harold and Lucille (Satrum) Halvorson. He attended Lincoln Country School until 5th grade and later attended Irene Public School graduating from Irene High School in 1975. While growing up in rural Irene, Dennis loved to hunt, fish, and play athletics. He devoted his life to farming and working cattle. On July 22nd, 1989, Dennis married Nancy Schweitzer at Salem Mennonite Church. They enjoyed 24 years of memories and happiness together. When not on the farm, Dennis could be found playing softball and golf in the summer, “independent league” basketball in the winter, and at an occasional pinochle table. In his downtime, he enjoyed time with friends and family watching a John Wayne flick or jamming out to Hank Williams Jr. He would spend hours in the man cave playing cribbage and watching the Vikings. Survivors include his wife Nancy, four children; Angel (Dustin) Allen, Dave (Trisha) Schweitzer, Tim (Abby) Halvorson, and Nick (Ashley) Halvorson, six grandchildren; Noah, Griffin, Jace, Isabella, Cameron and Mariah; one brother, David (Deb) Halvorson; Step mother, Helen Halvorson, as well as several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Harold and Lucille Halvorson.
