Francis Thunder Hawk

Francis “Chubbs” Thunder Hawk, Sr. “Tasunke Kinyen” was born on October 26, 1944 at home in Porcupine, SD to Charles Thunder Hawk and Susie Jealous of Him-Thunder Hawk. Francis made his journey to the Spirit World on November 13, 2019 at the Rapid City Regional Hospital in Rapid City, SD. Francis Chub Thunder Hawk, Tasunke Kinye lived life doing what he loved, riding on many horseback rides and singing Lakota songs. He was a lowan wicasa. He composed many Lakota songs. He was a spiritual leader and taught and mentored many youth on horsemanship, Lakota songs, drum, culture, Tokala Dance Styles, and language. He lived in humility. He was a fluent Lakota speaker. He rode in the Unpan Gleska Wokiksuye Memorial ride (Big Foot Memorial) for 32 years, Peji Sla-Little Big Horn ride for 27 years, Standing Rock Chief's ride for 20 years, and Sobriety ride for 10 years. He was the Founder of Crazy Horse Memorial ride along with Eli Tail, Robert Sierra and Sky Hawk. At each ride, Chub is a cultural and spiritual leader to the rides and the youth. He tells stories, teach the riders and young people how to do things and follow protocol. He would tell the them stories passing on precious ancestral knowledge and taught them how to carry themselves in a traditional Lakota manner. Chubby has always been generous with his time and always helps out on every ride as he does anytime he is asked to do something. Chub also built many sundance arbors, sang at many occasions, and helped out at sundances. Chub is a descendant of Chief Thunder Hawk and Chief Standing Elk. Chub will be greatly missed by his Tiospaye, relatives and friends. Francis is survived by his loving wife, Lois E. Thunder Hawk; sons, Francis Thomas Thunder Hawk, Jr., Cecil Brian Thunder Hawk, Simon Thunder Hawk, Joseph Christopher Thunder Hawk, Cetan Mahpiya Skyhawk Thunder Hawk, and Clint Charles Thunder Hawk; daughters, Rebecca Ann Chief Eagle, Jennifer Faith Thunder Hawk, Hannah Joan Thunder Hawk-Dodge, Suzette Sabrina Thunder Hawk, and Glenda Misty White Bull; siblings, Gladys Gay, Cynthia Thunder Hawk, Genevieve Richards, Bernadette Thunder Hawk, Vincentia Thunder Hawk, Myrna Garfield, Nancy Gay, Arlene Gay, and Colin Gay; 53 grandchildren, and numerous great grandchildren. Francis was preceded in death by his parents, Susanna “Suzie” Jealous of Him and Charles Thunder Hawk; grandson, Hoka Hoksila Thunder Hawk; mother, Lillian “Fannie” Thunder Hawk; and siblings, Patrick Gay, Elizabeth Thunder Hawk, and Francis “Punchy” Thunder Hawk. Pallbearers will be William “Shorty” Brewer, Kermit Miner, Manaja Hill, Stephen Moose, Percy White Plume, Alex White Plume, Hinhan Loud Hawk, Ronald His Horse Is Thunder, Steven Brewer, Naca Charging Crow, Wendell Yellow Bull, and Norbert Bell.
