Carl Schnider Obituary

Carl William Schnider, 96, of Yankton, SD died Friday, March 18, 2011 at his home in Yankton. Funeral Services will be 2:00 pm, Tuesday, March 22, 2011 at Faith United Lutheran Church rural Volin. Burial will follow in the Church Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 pm Monday, March 21, at the Hansen Funeral Home in Irene. Carl was born July 25, 1914 to John and Anna (Thompson) Schnider at Olivet, SD. He was baptized at the Lutheran Church at Olivet. Carl attended the Bunker Hill and Iverson Country Schools near Carpenter, SD and attended High School for one year at Howard, SD. In 1930 he moved with his parents to Gayville, SD. He was employed by many farmers. On July 4, 1934 he joined the CCC’s (Civilian Conservation Corps) and was stationed at Camp Custer #1791 at Custer, SD. He was honorably discharged on March 31, 1935 and returned to Gayville and was employed by Nels Nelson until 1938 when he worked at Macy’s Standard Service in Vermillion, SD. On July 21, 1940 he was united in marriage to Ferne Jonason. This union was blessed with three children, twin sons; Milo and Marlo and a daughter Karen. They left Vermilion in 1942 and he worked as a farm hand for Andrew Jensen and Ole Larson in the Gayville-Meckling area until 1948 when he started farming on his own and moved to the Volin, Irene and Wakonda communities in 1949. They purchased their farm northwest of Volin in 1963 from Gordon and Clara Fystro and retired in 1980 but continued to live on the farm and rent out the land. In 2004 after living here for 41 years, they sold the farm and moved to an apartment in Yankton. In December 1950 they joined the Zion Lutheran Church (Faith United) where he served a term as Vice-President, was an usher part time and was a Trustee for many years. He was confirmed at Zion Church May 6, 1966 by Rev. Arley Fadness by adult confirmation. Carl was Clerk of Marindahl Township for 18 years and served a term on the Volin School Board. In the past where active members of Lutheran Brotherhood and Aid Association for Lutherans, now Thrivent, was a member of the Volin Community Club and helped with the construction of the café, was active in the Cortrust Band Heritage Club, Yankton Senior Citizen Center and the Yankton Lewis and Clark Gem and Mineral Society. He was an avid Rock Polisher and made a variety of jewelry; necklaces, earrings, bolo ties, belt buckles and key chains. He also enjoyed woodworking. He is survived by his wife of 70 years Ferne, son Milo of Yankton, daughter & son-in-law; Karen and Rick Haakinson of Sioux Falls, daughter-in-law Barb Schnider of Volin, 14 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, 9great-great-grandchildren, niece Violet (Rodney) Lamont of Mt. Home, Ark, 4 cousins in Denmark and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents John and Anna Schnider, brother Alfred and son Marlo. Blessed be his Memory.
