Robert Chatman JACKSON, Tennessee Obituary

Robert Chatman

On Sunday, August 30, 2015, God, in His infinite wisdom, called a faithful servant home, Robert Lonzelle Chatman. He was a brother, father, uncle, grandfather and friend. Robert was born in Memphis, Tennessee on February 11, 1943, to the late Mrs. Rosie Pearl Merriweather Chatman and the late Mr. Lonnie B. Chatman. He attended the public schools of Jackson, Tennessee. After graduating high school, Robert joined the United States Army. After two years in the Army, Robert’s beloved mother died, leaving behind nine children. Robert was granted an honorable discharge to care for his younger siblings. He loved his family and did the best that he could to provide for them. “Mr. Robert” was employed by the Jackson Madison County School System for over twenty years. Coming from a Christian home, Robert professed a hope in Christ and became a member of Salem Missionary Baptist Church at an early age. He later joined King Solomon Church, where he served as a choir member and janitor. Robert moved his membership one last time, to St. James Missionary Baptist Church. He was very active at St. James and was a member of the choir and the church cook. In addition to Robert’s parents, those preceding him in death were his beloved sister, Jacqueline Marie Chatman Brown and a devoted sister-in-law, Mary Ann Rogers Womack. Mr. Chatman is survived by his son, Anthony Crews; two grandchildren: Elise Davis and Anthony Whiteside; five sisters: Faye Chatman, Gwendolyn Chatman, Cynthia Womack, Cheryl Foreman (Billy) all of Jackson, TN and Mae Coe (Bryan) of Danville, IL; two brothers: Ronald Womack (Angela) of Jackson, TN and Gregory Womack of California; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, an honorary brother, Willie Gallaspy and a very special friend, Ms. Carolyn Robinson.
