Helen Marie McInturff, 85 passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 9, 2019 at her son’s home with her loved ones beside her. She had lived in Unicoi County most of her life. She was the daughter of the late Anna Mae Burgner Gouge and Willard Gouge. Upon graduating from Unicoi County High School, she started working at the Life of Georgia Insurance Company in Johnson City, Tennessee. She worked there for thirty-one years. She attended East Tennessee State University for two years studying Accounting and Economics. Upon retiring, she worked as a volunteer in two nursing homes in Johnson City for one year. After a year off, she entered the work force and went to work at the Unicoi County School System. She worked as the Cafeteria Manager at the High School for sixteen years until retiring from the school system. She then worked at Re/Max Four Seasons Realty as the Office Manager/Accounting for seventeen years with her son. She was very active in her church for over 50 years serving in the following areas: Sunday School Teacher for over 20 years; Worked with the Youth for over 10 years; Building Fund Treasurer, SPR Committee Chairperson; Administrative Board Member; Overseeing the Thanksgiving Project for 15 years and Overseeing the Christmas Magic Programs for years. She was a teacher/leader for a Bible Study Program in Johnson City for thirteen years. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd D. McInturff. Helen leaves behind to cherish her memory, one son, J. Alan “Rocky” McInturff, three poodles, Sampson, Sara and Bentley. “She loved her poodles like children”. They were very special to her and was the love of her life. The funeral services will be held on Thursday, February 14, 2019 at Unicoi Baptist Church starting at 2:00 p.m. She grew up in the Baptist Church and was saved at the age of twelve. The committal service will follow at the Unicoi Swingle Cemetery. The family would like to express a special thank you to the caregiver, Charles Lynn Smith for taking care of her and especially loving her like a mom. She loved him and thought of him as a son. The family would also like express a very special thank you to two very special individuals who have been there for Helen for many years, day by day. Thank you, Lisa Martin and Robert Martin for being truly a true friend to Helen and Floyd for many years. In lieu of flowers, any one wishing to make a contribution in memory of Helen Marie McInturff can be made to the Holston Home For Children in Greeneville, Tennessee. The address is: 404 Holston Drive, Greeneville, Tennessee 37743. This was one of Helen’s passions working with children and being assured they were taken care of. She always loved working with children to make sure that their needs were taken care of.
