Joan Elsie Carter Baxter Garland, 12-7-1931, Unicoi, went to her heavenly home on Wednesday, February 27, 2019 while she was surrounded by her family. She was a native of Kenton, England but lived most of her life in Unicoi County and Jacksonville, FL. Joan is a daughter of the late Frank and Lilian Roberts Baxter. She met and married the love of her life, Ralph while he was stationed in England with the United States Air Force. Prior to her marriage, Joan enjoyed working at a dress shop in England. After her marriage, she became a wonderful homemaker and talented baker. She was a member of First Methodist Church, Johnson City and former member of Centenary United Methodist Church, Erwin and St. Paul United Methodist Church, Jacksonville. Joan was an active member of the choir and enjoyed singing. Joan loved dancing and was a member of numerous Square Dance and Line Dancing Clubs. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend. Her beautiful and cheerful smile lit up every room she entered. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers: Clifford Gordon Baxter and David Leslie Baxter. She leaves behind to cherish her memory, her loving and devoted husband of sixty-four years, Ralph Garland; one daughter, Michelle Browning (Robert), Jacksonville, FL; two grandsons: Christopher Browning (Danielle), Jacksonville, FL and Jonathan Browning, Gainsville, FL; three great grandchildren: Mekdes Browning, Daggie Browning and Thea Browning, all of Jacksonville, FL; three brothers: Ronald Baxter (Rita), Basingstoke, England, Dr. Colin Baxter (Tamara), Johnson City, Dr. Paul Baxter (Joanna) LaGrange, GA; two nieces: Dr. Paula Johnson (Dr. Philip), Sarah Fletcher (Galen); four nephews: Andrew Baxter (Monet), Christopher Baxter, Peter Baxter and Michael Baxter. The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Amedisys Hospice nurses Becky and Ashley for taking such wonderful care of Joan. The family will receive friends from 1:00-2:00 P.M. on Sunday, March 3, 2019 at the Unicoi Funeral Home. Chaplain Karl Gasser and Reverend Jane Taylor will officiate the 2:00 P.M. celebration of life service. Music will be provided by Inez Chandler. Interment will follow in the Roselawn Memory Gardens. Pallbearers will be Christopher Browning, Jonathan Browning, Galen Fletcher, Dr. Philip Johnson, Willard Hughes and Andrew Baxter.
