Corrine Dade was the first born to Alice Mae Rutherford – Dade and Theodore Roosevelt Dade on February 27, 1927. She recently celebrated her 90th birthday. She grew up in Franklin County, Mt. Vernon, Texas and attended school there until her mother moved her and her three siblings, Billye Lloyd, Dorothy Jean, Alice Faye and her mother’s youngest sister, Catherine Walker – Wilcox to Abilene in 1942. Corrine attended Abilene Negro High School and graduated in 1945 in a class of twelve students, six males and six females. After graduation, she attended Jarvis Christian College in Hawkins, Texas for one year and returned to Abilene where she was employed for two years as a domestic worker. Later she was hired as the elevator operator at Thornton’s Department Store and retired from Thornton’s after forty plus years as Merchandise Receiving Clerk. She met and married Thurman Richard Hill and embarked upon a wonderful journey as a devoted and supportive wife. No children were born to this union, but she spent numerous hours parenting college students attending Abilene Christian University, her nephews, nieces and neighborhood children. Mrs. Hill was a perfect example of what faithful living, discipline and unconditional love were about to her family. She stressed respect, obedience, and the value of working. She referred to her job assignment to all of us as “character building”. She spent her life working at the North 10th and Treadaway Blvd. Church of Christ wherever there was a need. She was fond of the young ones and spent time mothering them in the Nursery. She participated in the Sunday School class for adults, was secretary of Ladies Bible class, secretary for Southwestern Christian College, Terrell, Texas, activities, member of Prime-timers, served on the Decorating Committee for Fellowship and was a member of Retired Senior Volunteer program until her health began to fail in late 2014. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and brother, Billye Lloyd Dade. She is survived by her two sisters, Alice Faye Whaley and Dorothy Wiseman of Abilene. Rickye D. Wiseman, a nephew of Abilene, who loved her dearly and cared for her throughout her illness.
