Phyllis M. Core, 93, died Thursday, April 20, 2017 at a local care facility. Visitation will be Sunday, April 23, 2017 from 5 to 7 pm at North’s Funeral Home, 242 Orange Street, Abilene. Services will be 1:30 P.M. Monday, April 24, 2017 at Westminster Presbyterian Church, Abilene with Reverends Ernie McLean and Chris Turner officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood Memorial Park, directed by North’s Funeral Homes. Kathryn Phyllis Core was born September 25, 1923 in Naborton, Louisiana to Harry and Ruth McVelia. She graduated from Ada (Oklahoma) High School and attended East Central State College. She married William Core of Ada in 1946; together they raised five children. They moved to Abilene in March 1957. She was preceded in death by her husband, one daughter (Jacqueline Core McLean), her parents, and her sister. Phyllis was an ordained elder in the Presbyterian Church, USA. She was an active volunteer for many years at Hendrick Medical Center and at Stamford Memorial Hospital. She held several local and state offices in the Texas Association of Hospital Auxiliaries. She was an active volunteer for Meals on Wheels Plus for over 10 years. She volunteered at Reagan Elementary School, Abilene. She was a member of Big Country Emmaus Community and Palo Duro Presbyterian Cursillo Community. She and her late husband founded Instrument Maintenance Co., Inc., an industrial wholesale firm that provides pressure, flow, and temperature equipment to a large area of Texas and adjoining states. She is survived by son William George (Sara) Core and daughters Barbara Ann Core of Abilene, Carol Lynn (Ron) Hedrick of Lubbock, Catherine (David) Puzan of Apison, Tennessee, and son-in-law, Ernie McLean. She is further survived by nine grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. The family requests remembrances be made to either Meals on Wheels Plus of Abilene, Westminster Presbyterian Church of Abilene, First Central Presbyterian Church of Abilene, or a favorite charity. The family offers their sincere and intentional Thanks! to the Staff at Wesley Court Skilled Nursing Unit, and to Eva, Susan, and Tammy – the angels who minister at Hospice of the Big Country.
