Leonora Gutierrez Moreno, age 77, passed away September 26, 2017. A Funeral Mass will be held Friday, at 2:30 P.M. September 29, 2017 in Holy Family Catholic Church with Father Fred Nawarskas officiating, burial to follow in Elmwood Memorial Park, under the direction of North’s Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 5:00 P.M. ~ 6:00 P.M. with Rosary from 6:00 P.M. ~ 7:00 P.M. in North’s Memorial Chapel, 242 Orange St. She was born January 14, 1940, to her parents Bruno and Julia Gutierrez, the sixth of nine children, in Mathis, Texas. She grew up in Mathis, graduating from high school there, and soon after she met her future husband, Joe Moreno. They courted for over a year and were married on November 6, 1960. Shortly after their wedding, Joe and Leonora moved to Abilene, Texas, where they remained the rest of their lives. They were blessed with three children, Richard, Norma, and Ray. Leonora was a devoted and loving mother, and her children were her pride and joy. She successfully balanced her child-rearing and homemaking duties with work outside of the home. She was an accomplished seamstress, utilizing her talents not only for her immediate family, but also for friends and neighbors. She also helped manage a successful service station business with her husband for more than thirty years. Afterwards, she was a cafeteria monitor at Taylor Elementary School until she retired in 2004. Leonora was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Santos Moreno; her parents, Bruno and Julia Gutierrez; her brothers Benito (Sammy) and Lino Gutierrez; and her sisters Dora Amador and Adela Gutierrez. She is survived by her sons J. Richard Moreno and Ray Daniel Moreno and wife, Jennifer; her daughter Norma Lee Turman; her grandson Austin James Turman; her brother Bruno Gutierrez; and her sisters Mary Garcia, Lydia Almaraz, and Elsa Herrera; and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends whom she considered family. Leonora had a warm and generous heart, always willing to help her family or friends in need and always willing to lend an ear and a shoulder to support those she loved. As devoted as she was to her children, she was equally devoted to her grandson, Austin. He, too, was her pride and joy and she was the epitome of a loving and doting grandmother to him.
