Landon Sloan Obituary

Landon Elizabeth (Betty Lan) Lacewell Sloan departed this life on Sunday, July 28, 2013 in Cleburne. She was 100 years old, having been born to Joseph Franklin Lacewell and Nannie Mae Colquitt Lacewell on October 5, 1912, in Rio Vista. She had lived in Cleburne since she was in the second grade. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Lamar Sloan, and by her son-in-law, Terry E. Orrick, and her first beloved caregiver and friend Goldie Blanchette. She is survived by her daughter, Landa Beth Sloan Orrick, grandsons, Robert Orrick of Tulsa and Brian Orrick and wife Marianela and great-grandson Max of Austin, along with her first cousin, Dr. William Colquitt Smyth of Tyler, and many cousins. She graduated from Cleburne High School, attended Texas Christian University, and received a bachelors degree from North Texas State Teachers College in Denton in 1935. She taught school for two years in Frisco and then returned to Cleburne to begin work as a bookkeeper in her fathers and uncle Paul Colquitts drug stores, Colquitt-Lacewell, one on the east side and one on the west side of the Johnson County Courthouse square. Mr. and Mrs. Sloan married on March 7, 1942 in Gainesville, Florida, before he went to serve in the North African and Italian campaigns in World War II. She and Mr. Sloan established Sloans Drug in 1947 on Henderson Street by the bus depot in Cleburne. The soda fountain in Sloans Drug became a popular hangout for high schoolers and bus commuters of that era, so even though it was not a prescription pharmacy, it was very successful. They merged Sloans Drug with the Colquitt-Lacewell stores, and the firm became Colquitt-Lacewell-Sloan Drug Company at the retirement of Mrs. Sloans father, Mr. Lacewell in 1951. The Sloans retired in 1976, selling Colquitt-Lacewell Sloan Drug Co. to Royce and Becky Cheyne. Mrs. Sloan was a founding member of the Westside Church of Christ and belonged to the Victory Circle of Kings Daughters, where she was very active in the Goodfellow Fund project. She volunteered for Johnson County Meals on Wheels as well. She was a member of the Thursday Book Club and several bridge clubs. Mrs. Sloan belonged to many genealogical societies, including the Daughters of the American Revolution, the National Society Colonial Dames XVII Century, the National Society Magna Charta Dames and Barons, and the Order if the Crown of Charlemagne. Mrs. Sloans interests were varied. She was an avid reader and crossword puzzler, as well as being a passionate and knowledgeable baseball fan. Growing up she loved horses and loved to ride. Family came first with her and she loved them above all. The family wishes to thank Community Hospice, especially Bob Drapiza, RN and Debbie Stafford, CNA, for the incredibly skilled and truly compassionate care that they provided Mrs. Sloan. The family also wishes to thank the many loving caregivers who have been devoted to her over the last few years: Brenda Bourquin, Tara Bray, LVN, Sue Drapiza, LVN, Luevena Hardemon, LVN, Edythe Sanders, Brenda Sorrells, and Laura Youngberg. The family is deeply grateful to friends and farm managers Hugo and Sue Estrada for the love and care they showed Mrs. Sloan, and for honoring Mrs. Sloan by making her Windy Hill Farm a beautiful sanctuary for horses. Her funeral will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Thursday, Aug 1, 2013 at Crosier-Pearson Cleburne Funeral Home Chapel, with a reception to follow. There will be a private interment.
