Mickey Kenneth Scott passed away Easter Sunday, April 20, 2014 in Cleburne. He was born in Hamlin, Texas on August 3, 1928 to John Henry and Frances Elizabeth George Scott. At the age of 17, Mickey left home to volunteer to serve in the United States Marine Corps. He was initially based in Hawaii and served in a security MOS while he completed his high school degree. Soon after arriving in Hawaii, peace was taken from South Korea and Mickey volunteered to deploy for combat duty in Korea. He was assigned to Dog Company, 2nd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment of the First Marine Division. Mickey was involved in various combat missions to include combat operations along the Chosin Reservoir. The battle of the Chosin Reservoir was the Iwo Jima of the Korean War. On November 27, 1950, Mickey was taken captive by the Chinese Communist fighters and he would remain a prisoner of war (POW) for the next 990 days. Through mental strength, physical endurance, and reliance on his faith in God, Mickey survived and returned home as one of the members of the Chosin Few. Mickey was the recipient of numerous decorations and awards, including the Purple Heart, World War II Victory Medal, USN Presidential Citation, ROK Presidential Citation, U.S. Korean Service Medal and many others. Following his return home, Mickey attended Hardin Simmons University where he earned his B.B.A. and M.A. degrees. During this time, he met the love of his life, Barbara, who became his wife on December 1, 1956. Shortly after his graduation from Hardin Simmons, Mickey joined Texas Instruments where he spent the more than 23 years of service in Dallas, Houston and Austin. Mickey retired from Texas Instruments in 1985 and spent the next decade working alongside his wife in their retail business in Austin until 1997 when they moved to Cleburne. Mickey spent much of his leisure time reading. He loved to study history and was particularly fond of American History. He was a very proud Texan and loved to study Texas History and heritage. When Mickey wasn't reading, he was likely to be working in the lawn and garden. Mickey loved to be outside and also enjoyed home improvement projects. Mickey is survived by his wife of 57 years, Barbara Scott of Cleburne; son, Michael Scott and wife Ashley of Plano; daughter, Beverly Scott of Cleburne; and four wonderful grandchildren, Sydney, Jackson, Hayley, and Harrison, along with numerous nieces and nephews. Mickey was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Kelly, Walter, and Willie; and his sisters, Thelma, Lois, and Jimalee. Memorial service for Mickey Kenneth Scott, 85, will held Saturday, May 3, 2014, 11:00 A.M. at Field Street Baptist Church in Cleburne. Visitation will be at the Crosier-Pearson Cleburne Funeral Home from 6-8:00 P.M. on Friday, May 2nd.
