Service for Phil Barrett Koonce, 87, of Keene, will be conducted at 10:00 A.M. Monday, June 9, 2014 in the Hurley Funeral Home Chapel. Mr. Riley Dunn will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasanton City Cemetery in Pleasanton. Pallbearers will be Fletcher Dunn, Chuck Talley, Jon Koonce, Bryan Koonce, Lester Land, and Jim Koonce. Phil Barrett Koonce passed away Wednesday, June 4, 2014 in Keene. He was born February 2, 1927 in Pleasanton to George and Rosa Lee Cook Koonce. He married Genevieve Vickers on July 28, 1946 in Pleasanton and she preceded him in death on January 1, 2011. Mr. Koonce served his country in the United States Navy. The flag that drapes his casket is the same flag that draped his brother’s casket when he was returned from Iwo Jima during WWII. He worked as a production supervisor with Shell Oil Company until retirement. Phil served as an elder for both the Pleasanton and Jersey Village Congregations of the Church of Christ. He was very supportive of Missionary work in India. Survivors include his daughter, Jonni Dunn and husband Riley of Cleburne; son, James H. Koonce and wife Coleen of Taylor, TX; granddaughter, Cassel Talley and husband Chuck of Arlington; grandsons, Fletcher Dunn and wife A’me of Newcastle, WA, Jon Koonce and wife Mary of Round Rock, and Bryan Koonce of Abilene; nine great grandchildren; and nephew, Patrick Shannon and wife Susan of San Antonio. He was also preceded in death by his parents; sister, Georgia Lea Koonce Shannon; brother, Herbert L. Koonce; and grandson, Josh B. Koonce.
