Billie Jo Braly Conger, 85, passed away on Saturday, October 12, 2019, after a brief illness. She was born June 23, 1934, in Barry, Texas. She graduated from Barry High School in 1951 and Methodist Hospital of Dallas, School of Nursing, in 1955. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Corsicana. She is survived by her son, Tim Conger of Austin; her brother, John Wade Braly, and sister-in-law, Marcia Lou Braly of Barry; nieces and nephews Julie Green of Corsicana, John Arnold of Corsicana, Tom Arnold of Grapevine, Anna Mize of Allen, Glyn Phillips of Barry, Wade Braly of Barry and Susan McMath of Corsicana. Billie was preceded in death by her parents, John and Anna Clay Braly of Barry, and her sisters, Naomi Arnold of Corsicana and Pat Watkins of Barry. After graduating from nursing school, Billie returned to Corsicana, where she would embark on a long and distinguished career of more than four decades of service to the citizens of Navarro County as a public health nurse for the Corsicana-Navarro County Health Department. Over the years, she would be recognized and honored for her service and contributions to the community. She would play an instrumental role in adding such vital services as child health, Women Infants and Children (WIC), and the prenatal and primary health care programs for the county. In November of 1987, the Navarro County Commissioners Court adopted an official proclamation commending her selfless service of providing health care to the needy citizens of the county. The same year, she would be recognized by the Texas Department of Human Services for her work in conducting clinics for children through the state’s Medicaid program. In 1993, Billie would be presented the Distinguished Service Award by the Corsicana-Area Chamber of Commerce in recognition of her continuing community service. Also in 1993, she would be recognized by the state Department of Health with a Certificate of Appreciation for her meritorious service to the citizens of the Texas. By official proclamation, Corsicana Mayor Wilson Griffin declared March 25, 1994, as “Billie Jo Conger Day” in recognition of her giving “unselfishly of her time and talents to improve the quality of health care for the citizens of Navarro County” and for being a “friend and inspiration to the citizens of this community.” In 2004, she was honored by the Navarro County Medical Society in recognition of 45 years of service to better the health of the citizens of Navarro County. Affectionately referred to as Bebo and Wickum by her family, Billie was an avid fan of the Texas Rangers, Dallas Mavericks and University of Texas Longhorns. Even up to the final days of her life she enjoyed watching sports, playing bridge with her friends and spending time on the internet with her iPad. Visitation with the family will be held Tuesday, October 15, 2019, from 6:00–8:00 p.m. at Corley Funeral Home. Funeral services are scheduled for Wednesday, October 16, 2019, at 2:00 p.m. at the Corley Funeral Home Chapel. Jeff Mize will officiate the service and burial in Oakwood Cemetery. Pallbearers are Tom Arnold, John Arnold, Wade Braly, Wade Green, Justin Hooper, Jack McMath, Bankston McMath and Steve Phillips.
