Obituary for Herminia O. Valdez

"I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith." 2 Timothy 4:7 Herminia (Mini) Valdez was 68 years old. On October 24, 2008 after a struggle with acute myelogenous leukemia, the time came for her departure. She was very short of breath as this particular race ended, but she looked at her assembled family, told them how much she loved them, praised her Lord and cheerfully exclaimed "Ready. Set. Go!" Her family and friends are left with wonderful memories of a life that began in Fairacres, New Mexico, as the youngest daughter in a very large and even more vibrant Olivas family. She graduated from Ysleta High School in 1958. After seven years as a novice with the Sisters of Perpetual Adoration, she returned to the laity in 1969. In 1974, she married Jose. S. Valdez. Mini used her graceful heart and keen intellect to provide a loving home for her family, as well as study Scripture with several El Paso Bible study groups. In 1999, she completed ¬°Grito!, a novel set in the time of the Mexican War of Independence, a work that her family hopes to one day share with a larger audience. Her husband survives to celebrate her life along with daughters Kristal Linney (Tom), Yvette Smith (Bill), Terry McKee (James) and Janice Hardin (Peter), as well as her son, Jeremy (Erin). Mini is also survived by seven grandchildren and her brother Manuel Olivas, and sisters Trini Lozano, Amalia Booher and Mary Aguilar. Her family wishes to thank Dr. Juan Herrada and all the staff of the El Paso Cancer Treatment Center, the wonderful people at La Mariposa Hospice and all those who donate much needed blood. Visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Monday October 27, 2008, Hillcrest Funeral Home-West. At 7:00 p.m. a Scripture service will begin in Lieu of the more traditional Catholic Rosary. Mini's family and friends are invited to celebrate her ecumenical spirit by offering favorite readings, prayers, stories and music. Funeral Mass will be at 12:00 p.m. at Queen of Peace Catholic Church, 1551 Belvidere. Interment will be at Fort Bliss.
