Antonia Flores Obituary

Antonia Martinez Flores After a prolonged illness, Antonia “Tonia” Martinez Flores, 84, passed away peacefully in her sleep early Saturday morning February 15, 2020. Her final days were spent surrounded by family and loved ones. Antonia was born on October 18, 1935 in the small south Texas town of Encinal to Maria and Hilario Martinez. She grew up on a small farm with her parents and siblings and attended school in Cactus. The family later moved to Houston in 1951 and Antonia got a job selling movie tickets at the Ritz theatre. There she met Richard Flores and they married in 1955. They raised six children and started a small upholstery business in 1967 where she worked as a seamstress. At the same time she was a homemaker and mother to their young family. Antonia loved many things but above all else she loved her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Her favorite pastimes included dancing, singing, cooking for her family, gambling at a casino and watching major league baseball and the Houston Astros. But what brought her the most joy was watching her youngest child, Bianca Antonia, dance flamenco professionally. She is preceded in death by her father Hilario, her mother Maria, and her sisters Carmen and Mary. She is survived by her six children, Richard Flores, Jr. and wife Gloria, Nora Flores, Thelma Meyers and husband Toby, Peter Flores, David Flores and wife Diane, and Bianca Antonia Flores and husband Xavier Torres-Torres, as well as her grandchildren Geoffrey Meyers and wife Shera, Phillip Meyers and wife Brooke, Sasha Ramirez and husband Ernesto, Victor Estrada and Luis Torres, and her great grandchildren Isabella Meyers, Josephine Meyers, Florence Antonia Meyers, Carleigh Newland, Ethan Newland and Emma Newland. She is also survived by the father of her children Richard Flores and her six siblings Jesse Martinez, Frank Martinez, Joe Martinez, Isabel Martinez, Julia Ramirez and Maggie Goscinski as well as many nieces and nephews and dear family friends Roger Nicholson and Alejandro Armendariz. A memorial and celebration of life will be held Saturday, February 22, 2020 from 11am to 2pm at the Czech Center Museum, 4920 San Jacinto, Houston, Texas. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that a donation be made in her memory to the MD Anderson Cancer Center Foundation.
