Earl Ray Monk, known by his friends as “Ray”, and by his family as “Uncle Red,” passed away on September 29, 2016. He was born on August 26, 1924 in Houston, Texas to Edgar B. Monk and Maudie Mae Pritchett. He was preceded in death by both parents and his three sisters: Velma Monk, Dorothy Bond, and Myrtle Scanlin. He is survived by one niece, three nephews, and numerous great nieces and nephews. The family will deeply miss gathering at his home each and every Christmas Day. After graduating from Reagan High School, he enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps and served throughout the Pacific Theater during World War II. After serving his country, he enrolled at the University of Houston. While still in college, he began working for the Humble Oil and Refining Company, which later became Exxon Mobil. He retired from Exxon Mobil at the age of 57. The University of Houston was very dear to him. Through a generous donation, he established a tier one scholarship endowment at the C. T. Bauer College of Business. He has also significantly contributed to the Moores School of Music, resulting in a conference room being named in his honor. He had many, many lifelong friends, and was always a joy to be with. His passions were playing Bridge and attending University of Houston Cougar football games. He was also a long time member of Reagan Lodge No. 1037, as well as the Scottish Rite, and the Arabia Shrine Temple. We love and miss you, Uncle Red. Graveside services will be held at the Historic Hollywood Cemetery located at 3506 N. Main Street in Houston, Texas. The service will begin at 11:00 am, on Friday, October 7, 2016.
