Ed Starkey was born on April 21, 1951, and passed away on August 7, 2016, when he lost his battle with pancreatic cancer at 2:00 a.m. Sunday. His “Last call” was a peaceful passing. Ed was an Army Vietnam ASA veteran, occupational therapist assistant and a bass musician. He was preceded in death by his father Richard Lee Starkey, mother Evelyn Cramer Ammon, stepmother Betty Starkey, sisters Barbara Haltom and Sandy Louviere, brother-in-law Darius Mikulskis. He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Rasa Starkey, siblings Taunya Offdenkamp, Mikki Gray, Terry Ammon, Marie Reeves, son Ted Huckaby, numerous nieces and nephews, in- laws Al and Grazina Mikulskis, and Marius Mikulskis. Ed was a much loved local musician in the Blues and Country music community. His steady rhythm, quick wit and sense of humor will be missed. Ed traveled the country early in his career making friends and memories. He was devoted to those friendships, most lasting decades. Ed loved his family; fishing; dogs, especially his beloved Cubby, Krypto, Runt and Abby; taking pictures; chocolate ice cream; Oreos; a good steak; old TV Westerns; Perry Mason; any John Wayne movie; and playing good music with good friends. Ed wanted to thank all those who have supported him in his struggle over the last year and a half. Especially: Howie Douthey, Moses Rangel, Claude Wooley, Wayne “Animal” Turner, James “Country Jim” Sloan, Leslie Ann Sloan, Joe Busa, Brian Thomas, Brad Absher, Buck and Linda Wright, Tom McClinton, Reuben Ramirez, the Houston Blues Society, the staff at Episcopal High School who supported his wife thru his illness, the amazing doctors and nurses at the VA Hospital, and Houston Hospice. Remember Ed by dropping a line off the Texas City Dike, taking a long drive on the back roads of Texas, supporting a local band or listening to your favorite song--and pay attention to the bass! As per his request, there will be no memorial service. He will be cremated and his ashes will be scattered at Estes Park in Colorado, his favorite place on Earth. Ed felt that the benefits held in his honor at the Track Shack and Big Easy, which brought together a diverse group of local musicians and fans, were his services. He wishes to be remembered with good music, humor and friendship, instead of sadness.
