Gregory Lynn Cox was born on June 6, 1952 in St. Louis, Missouri, the firstborn of Robert Leonard and Mary Jane (Lukachik) Cox. His mother says he was “always such a good boy, doing the right thing and never causing us a moment of trouble.” He grew up in Bridgeton, Missouri, graduating from Pattonville High School in 1970, the University of Missouri at St. Louis in 1974, and South Texas College of Law in 1977. Greg began his career as an associate attorney but soon formed the firm Oberholtzer, Cox, and Shaffer. In 1991, desiring to work closer to home, he opened The Law Office of Gregory L. Cox in Fort Bend County. He loved helping others and was highly respected by clients, other attorneys, and judges. He maintained his practice until August 2019, when his failing health forced him to stop doing what he loved. Though he worked long hours and demonstrated a strong work ethic, Greg was a devoted husband and very hands-on father and grandfather, always present at the kids’ games, activities, and performances. Though not an athlete himself, he served as a coach for Little League baseball, softball, soccer, and basketball. He used this time to invest in the lives of his own children while also making a difference in the lives of others. An active member of Sugar Land Baptist Church (formerly Williams Trace) since 1990, Greg served in multiple areas including pre-school music, the Legal Committee, and as a Deacon and church Trustee. But he found the most joy working in the Youth Department, mainly as Director of the 12th Grade Department. Greg was always young-at-heart and loved working with teenagers, striving to make church and Sunday School fun while helping to teach them biblical truths and practical life lessons. It was here that he obtained the lasting nickname “Lucky.” In his 25 years in Student Ministry, he touched the lives of many young people and left a legacy that will continue as they raise their own children and impact their communities. Greg was preceded in death by his father and also his brother, Robert L. Cox, Jr. (wife Linda, children Stephanie and Micah). Greg is survived by his one true love, Johnna, who he met in Biology II class in high school. They dated 3 years before marrying in December, 1973, while still in college; they became Texans when they moved to Houston in 1974 for Greg to attend law school. He leaves behind two beloved children, Kevin Michael Cox (wife Ashley, grandchildren Kayla and Travis) and Nora Elizabeth Davis (husband John, grandsons Beckett and Callum). He also leaves behind his precious mother, Mary, and his sister Tinna Sue Cox-Potter (husband Keith, children Chaska and Tehya). He is also survived by other treasured family members and “family of the heart” friends who enriched his life immeasurably. Greg loved to make people laugh, and we celebrate the fact that he is now in heaven, completely healed and able to laugh again.
