Dr. Horace David Murdock, 71, of Houston, TX passed away Thursday, February 23rd, surrounded by his loving wife and children. Horace was born January 6th, 1946 in Vicksburg, MS to Lucille and Horace Murdock. He graduated from high school in Prairie View, TX and earned his Bachelor of Arts in Zoology from the University of Texas at Austin in 1967. He earned his Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree and was elected into Alpha Omega Alpha from Meharry Medical College in Nashville, TN in 1972. He completed his general surgery internship in Chicago, IL in 1973 and general surgery residency at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Houston, TX in 1977. Through his residency program he spent time at Brackenridge Hospital in Austin, TX where he met his sweetheart Sylvia. They married on August 14, 1976. Horace completed a surgical oncology fellowship at MD Anderson in Houston, TX in 1978. He then completed his vascular fellowship in Mineola, NY in 1979 and a thoracic and cardiovascular surgery fellowship in Syracuse, NY in 1981. During their time in Syracuse, Horace and Sylvia welcomed their firstborn, David. The young family moved to Nashville, TN where Horace completed a cardiac surgery fellowship in 1982. The family then settled in Houston, TX where Horace established his practice at St. Joseph’s Hospital and they welcomed three more children: Brian (1982), Lauren (1987), and Colin (1992). Horace was a lifelong student of surgery and loved being in the operating room, where he saved countless lives. He shared a special bond with each of his four children. He will be remembered dearly by his wife, children, family, and friends.
