Obituary for Wyndol Clyde Byrd

Wyndol “Bill” Byrd of Houston, Texas, passed away Monday March 7, 2016 at the age of 88 years.

Bill was born on December 26, 1927 in Philadelphia, Pa.. In 1946 Bill joined the army and was stationed in Nurenburg, Germany with the 4th Medical Depot, where he worked as an optician making GI glasses. While stationed there he met his first wife Daria Pokotylo and married September 1949.They had 2 children, Daria and Walter before moving to Texas to be near his family and wife’s sister and family. They were married 52 years before her passing in 2004. After his discharge from the army, he went to work for several jobs in Austin before moving to Houston to work for Metropolitan Life as a salesmen for 34 years before he retired in 1989. In 2005 he married his current wife, Suzanne Byrd.

Bill enjoyed his family and many friends. He also enjoyed bowling, singing at nursing homes with the Celebration Singers of Houston, the CUMC chorus, traveling, and playing many card games. But most of all, Bill enjoyed life. He was a Master Mason of the Grand Lodge #1328 of Texas for 65 years. He was also a member of the Arabia Shriner Temple Greeters and Bowlers for many years. He was a member of the VFW Post #8790 were he is a life member.

Bill is survived by his wife of 10 years Suzanne Byrd. His daughter Daria and husband Bill Shearer. Grandson Kirk and Tracey Marquardt, Granddaughters Stacy and Stu Legge and Cassie Byrd. His Step Children, Mary Ann and Doran Hayes, Gary and Judy Whitehead, and John and Karen Whitehead, Jeff Shearer and Lea Shearer, Leah Shearer, Lauren Rockwell and Brian Rockwell. He also had 2 Great Grandchildren, Bryce and Colton Marquardt plus many Step-Great Grandchildren that loved him and knew him well.

He was preceded in death by: His first wife Daria Byrd, son Walter Byrd, sister Norma King, and sister Phyllis Shackelford.

A memorial service will be held at Cypress United Methodist Church at 10:00 am on Friday March 11th. In leiu of flowers, He requested that donations be made to either the Arabian Shiners Children's Hospital of Houston or Cypress United Methodist Church.
