Barbara Liedtke

BEDFORD -- Barbara Mary Liedtke passed away Friday evening, Jan. 10 in Bedford. A memorial service will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints chapel at 5312 Bransford Road in Colleyville (76034) on Wed, Jan. 15 at 4:30 p.m. She will be interred at the DFW National Cemetery in Dallas, next to her husband LeRoy, at a later date. Born in a logging camp cabin on Dec. 4, 1933 in Joseph, OR, Barbara was raised in Salt Lake City, UT, the eldest of four children. Her parents were Lawrence and Mary Atkinson and step-father Charles Hawks. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and a descendant of Mormon pioneers who traveled by ship from South Africa to New York before crossing the western plains and arriving in Salt Lake City in 1865. Her Mormon heritage manifested itself in her character and determination. Barbara graduated from West High School in Salt Lake City and attended LDS Business College for two years. While working at Hercules Industries in Salt Lake City, she met and married LeRoy Liedtke. In the 1960s, LeRoy's assignments for Lockheed took him and Barbara, along with their daughters, Michelle and Leeann, back and forth across the country, with stops in Amityville, NY, Buena Park, CA, Sunnyvale, CA, back to Salt Lake City, Silver Creek, NY and Pomona, CA, before they finally settled in Euless in 1969. Barbara was always very involved in the PTAs at her daughters' schools, where she developed long-lasting friendships with several of the other mothers. She particularly enjoyed participating in the PTA bowling league, and she took great joy in watching her daughters compete athletically during their high school years and beyond—Michelle in tennis and Leeann in rodeo. Known for her generosity and her great sense of humor and infectious laugh, Barbara had a gift for making anyone and everyone feel welcome. She was quick to strike up conversations with strangers, in all sorts of settings, and she never took herself too seriously. She also never met a garage sale or resale shop she didn't like. In addition to her parents, Barbara was preceded in death by her husband LeRoy Liedtke who passed away in 1984. sister Penny Lund, daughter Leeann Liedtke, brother Ron Hawks, and grandson Chris Collins. She is survived by her daughter Michelle Collins (Bob), and granddaughters Lindsay Peterson (Kristian), Rachel Russell (Jake), and Lauren Murray (Joseph), plus 10 great-grandchildren: Ryan, Shelby, Ruby, Jacob, Joshua, Zoe, Makenna, Garrett, Brielle, and Bailey, and Number 11, who is on the way. She is also survived by her sister, Joye Waid (Bill) of Phoenix. Other survivors include brother-in-law Mac Lund, sister-in-law Marie Hawks, and a very special aunt, Virginia Tea, all three of Salt Lake City, along with numerous cousins, nieces and nephews, and many special friends in Texas, Utah, New York, Georgia and Costa Rica. Barbara is also survived by her close friend and companion, Alfredo Tamayo, who brought her great happiness during their 20-plus years together and provided countless hours of comfort and care as her health waned. The family wishes to thank the doctors, nurses and staff at Ethicus Hospital in Grapevine for their compassion and dedicated care. Thanks also go to the staff at Heartland in Bedford for their care and kindness in her final days. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Barbara's name to a favorite charity.
