BEDFORD -- Jack Van Tol, 70, of Bedford died at his home Sunday, May 6, 2012. Service: An inurnment ceremony is scheduled for 1 p.m. Friday, June 22, in Finns Point National Cemetery, Pennsville, N.J. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made to the American Diabetes Association or the American Heart Association. Jack was the son of the late John and Selma Sweetman Van Tol, born April 14, 1942, in Paterson, N.J. He attended Pompton Lakes High School and at the age of 16 was honored by the VFW for saving a man from drowning in Pompton Lakes and was presented with a Heroism Award in December 1958. He entered the U.S. Navy and served from 1960 to 1964 aboard the USS Nitro and attained the rank of radarman second class. While aboard the USS Nitro, he made several Mediterranean cruises as well as participating in the Cuban Blockade. After his honorable discharge from the Navy, he worked for several years at El Dupont before becoming a Ringwood police officer. He was a police officer from 1971 to 1982 and was awarded many commendations. Jack moved to the Dallas-Fort Worth areas in the early 1980s and was employed at Mostek Electronics for several years as a security supervisor and ended his career as a truck driver in 2005. Jack was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting and fishing. He loved to travel and went on frequent road trips on his Harley-Davidson. Jack was a passionate collector of Delft pottery and Indian artifacts. Jack was compelled to speak his mind and often said, "I did it my way," which was how he lived his life. Predeceasing him was former wife, Margaret "Peggy" Gibson. Survivors: Children, John D. Van Tol Jr. of Catasauqua, Pa., and Jane Spradlin of Slatington Pa.; brother, Douglas Van Tol and wife, Mary, of Cape Coral, Fla.; nephews, Douglas Van Tol Jr. of Wakefield, R.I., and Eric Van Tol of Gaithersburg, Md.; aunts, Marilyn Sweetman of Whiting, N.J., and Jeanette Poulson of Pompton Lakes, N.J.. Jack was cared for by his loving former spouse, Marie "Bunny" Van Tol of Hurst.
