Lena Bailey Obituary

Died as she lived; peacefully, quietly and without fanfare early on Saturday, December 10,2011. Held in the arms of her only child, Ann, she opened her beautiful blue eyes momentarily, gazed upward, smiled and entered into her long-awaited Heavenly home. We cannot even begin to imagine the joyful reception she received, nor the beauty and splendor of her new surroundings. Born August 11,1925 in Olney, Texas to Joseph and Annabell Crutcher, she graduated Olney High School and moved to Wichita Falls, Texas, where she taught sewing classes and lived with her sister Margie, and her best friend and cousin, Willie Mae. In 1942 she met Robert "Bob" Allen Bailey at a skating rink, and after overcoming her aggravation at being referred to as a "tall gal" by him, they eventually married in 1946. During WWII she kept a scrapbook of all the young men deployed from the nearby Shephard Air Force Base in Wichita Falls; my dad often referred to the book as her "Shephard Air Field Commandos". Moving to Ft. Worth, Texas after marrying, Bob and LaVerne settled on the southwest side of town in a new post-war development area called "Greenbriar" and became active in the Northside Church of God, where they would be members for over twenty years. During this time LaVerne continued to share her talent of creating beautiful garments with friends, neighbors and co-workers. She was the fabric buyer for a small retail store called "The Fair" in exclusive West Ft. Worth. It was there her expertise in fine fabrics and meticulous detail to craftsmanship was honed; skills she would later transfer into her own business and in support of other dressmaking and alterations establishments. LaVerne is survived by her daughter Ann, her son-in-law, Carl and her beloved grandson, Jason Robert, of Frisco and Dallas. Her sister-in-law Alwanna Crutcher, of Kansas, six nephews and three nieces and her precious fur-person, Mindy, who came down from Heaven and adopted "Miss LaVerne" on December 24, 2010. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Bob, grandson Rodney and her brothers, Gene and Bill Crutcher and sister, Margie Robinson. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, December 20,2011 at 10:00 a.m. at Life Fellowship Church, Hurst, Texas where she and Bob were members for over 40 years. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to the Frisco Humane Society in memory of Miss LaVerne and Mindy.
