William Massey "Bill" Galloway III of North Richland Hills, Texas was born February 25, 1922, and died at home January 1, 2014 at the age of 91. Funeral service is 12 noon Saturday at the First Baptist Church of Smithfield in North Richland Hills, Texas. An additional Funeral Service will be held at 12 noon Monday in the Heritage Mausoleum chapel in Floral Haven cemetery in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. Bill was born to William Massey and Mary Victoria Slaughter Galloway II in England, Arkansas. Weighing two pounds, he was placed in a shoe box and kept warm behind the kitchen cook stove. Memphis, Tennessee became his hometown where he was a Boy Scout and graduate of Memphis Technical High School in 1940. Bill joined the United States Army Air Corps in 1940 and, with the coming of World War II, served the next five years as an electrical instructor in Air Corps Technical Schools. Staff Sgt. Galloway taught flight crews and maintenance personnel, as well as American Airlines and Pan American personnel, the intricacies of C-54 aircraft electrical systems. AS a member of a mobile training unit, he also rebuilt mock-ups for transport by air. He served on the United States mainland in Illinois, Mississippi, Florida, New York, Delaware, Maine, California, and Texas in addition to bases on the Pacific islands of Oahu, Hawaii, Johnston, Kwajalein, Siapan, Guam, Biak, and Mokerang through the end of the war. In 1946, Bill began a 40-year career with American Airlines in New York, New York. He transferred to the Tulsa, Oklahoma maintenance base in 1947, met and married his sweetheart Norma Ray Murphy, daughter of Ray and Mildred Floy Benbrook Murphy of Tulsa. During the Korean War, at the request of President Truman, he was called back into service for one year. He served in the United States Air Force as an electrical specialist of the B-36 aircraft at Carswell Field in Fort Worth, Texas. In 1979 he transferred to the AA Flight Academy in Fort Worth. Having worked as an electrical instructor, audiovisuals specialist, photographer and writer, he retired in 1986. Bill received Jesus Christ as his Savior and was baptized at age 11. He knew and followed his Lord the remainder of his long life on earth and into heaven, inviting all he knew to come along with him. He was active in Southern Baptist church life at University, Maplewood, Parkland, and Garnett Road Baptist churches in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and First Baptist Church of Smithfield in North Richland Hills, Texas. Responsibilities entrusted to him included serving and teaching as a deacon and adult Sunday School teacher. The pride and joy in Bill's life was his family. He and Norma celebrated 66 years of marriage on October 19, 2013 and their loving union was blessed with five daughters. He was known as a life-long student and scholar of the Bible, as well as being a family reunion, genealogy, book, camera, coin, stamp and train enthusiast.
