Guy Douglas Smith, Jr., 90, of Dallas, passed away April 30, 2013 at his home in Dallas. Graveside services will be 2PM, Saturday, May 4, 2013 in the Mexia Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be 12:00 – 1:30 p.m., Saturday at Blair-Stubbs Funeral Home. Guy was born August 17, 1922 in Mexia, Texas to Guy Douglas Smith, Sr. and Irene Buchanan Smith. He grew up in Mexia and graduated from Mexia High School in 1939. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1942 and served in the European Theater during World War II. On December 18, 1944, during the Battle of the Bulge, he was captured when his unit was overrun. Guy arrived at Stalag IXB in Bad Orb, Germany on Christmas Day, 1944 and was liberated on Easter Sunday, 1945. He was honorably discharged in 1946 and received the P.O.W. medal in 1981, after it was created by President Ronald Reagan. Guy married Patricia L. Page in Mexia, Texas on January 7, 1950. He enjoyed spending time with his family, music and singing. It was also evident that he remained patriotic to the country he so proudly served. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 57 years, Pat; and brother, Richard Faye Smith; and sister, Doris Smith Mullens. Guy is survived by his son, Guy Douglas “Doug” Smith, III and wife, Debra of Palestine; daughter, Stefani Wood and husband, Kevin of Dallas; grandchildren, Thomas Sistrunk, Shannon Smith, Mackenzie Duke, Dylan and Madison Wood: three great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews.
