John Jones Obituary

John M. Jones, of Shiloh, passed away July 9, 2017 in Mexia at the age of 78. Funeral services will be 2 PM, Friday, July 14, 2017 at Shiloh Baptist Church with Rev. David Snow officiating. Interment will follow in the Shiloh Cemetery with Mason Graveside Rites. Todd Jones, Nicholas Jones, Jason Morton, Clinton Winstead, Mitchell Jones, Luther Ray Jones, Jr. and Larry Jones will serve as pallbearers. Visitation with the family will be 5-7 p.m., Thursday, at Blair-Stubbs Funeral Home. John was born September 10, 1938 in Tyler, Texas to Joe B. and Ritabelle Herring Jones. He grew up in Marshall, Texas and graduated from Marshall High School, Class of 1957. John proudly served his country in the US Army during the Cuban Crisis; he loved the USA and forever remained proud and loyal to his country. John married the love of this life, Martha Elizabeth “Liz” Myers, on April 19, 1963 in Marshall, Texas and they were blessed with two sons, Marvin “Mitch” and Todd. They raised their family in Houston where John was active in coaching his sons in football, Rodeo activities and trail riding. In 1990, he and Liz moved to Shiloh. John loved living in the country and especially Shiloh. He enjoyed raising cattle and different types of chickens, along with his wife, who he jokingly called his “only cowboy”. He also enjoyed watching the western channel. There was nothing he enjoyed more than being around family and friends. He especially enjoyed time with his grandchildren, they were so very precious to him. John was a member of the Springfield Lodge #74 and Deacon of Shiloh Baptist Church. He also retired from the Mexia State School after 10 years of service. He was preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Luke Meredith Jones; and sister, Betty Jones. John is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Liz Jones of Shiloh; sons, Marvin Mitchell Jones of Dallas and Todd Meredith Jones and wife, Davida of Houston; grandchildren, Victoria Garza Winstead, Nicholas Angel Jones and Landry Luke Jones; great-grandchildren, Madison Winstead, Zeppelin Jones, Zadie Winstead and Lyric Jones; two nieces and three nephews.
