Mellie Merle "Honey" "Sunshine" Scott after 100 years and seven months of exploring most of her earthly desires and stimulating intelligent thought in all she came in contact with, died June 1, 2010 in Waco, Texas. Services will be held at Christ Episcopal Church in Mexia on Friday, June 4, 2010 at 1:00 pm with Rev. Mary Wilburn and Rev. Brad Brittain officiating. Visitation will be held at Blair-Stubbs Funeral Home, Thursday night from 6 until 8 o'clock. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the "Mexia Academic Sweater Fund". Mrs. Scott was born in Belton Texas on October 29, 1909 to Walter P. Mathews, Sr. and Maude Fouts-Mathews. The family moved to Dallas in 1922. She graduated from Sunset High School in Dallas and then continued her passion of education by completing her degree at Trinity University in Waxahachie. It was at Trinity where she met the love of her life and future husband Richard Cole Scott. The couple was married on November 11, 1935. In 1947 Honey and Dick moved to Mexia where they purchased Driver Ford which they renamed Dick Scott Ford in 1950. Mrs. Scott was employed by Morton Milling Company while she lived in Dallas then when she moved to Mexia she worked for The Mexia Chamber of Commerce, General Mexia Hospital and The Mexia Independent School District. Mrs. Scott was a very strong woman of faith and became an active member of The Christ Episcopal Church in 1948; this relationship lasted for over 60 years. Mellie Merle was preceded in death by her parents, mother, Maude Fouts Mathews, Eva Steger Mathews and father, Walter P. Mathews, her husband, Richard Cole Scott, her brothers, Louie F. Mathews and Walter Preston Mathews, Jr. She is survived by her sisters, Lula Goswick, Eva Lynn Reid and brother Allen Mathews and a multitude of friends and extended family. We celebrate the life of Mellie Scott, patron of the arts, world traveler and lover of life.
