Robert Spencer Obituary

Robert L. Spencer, 77, passed away May 9, 2014 in Mexia. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m., Sunday, May 11, 2014 at the First Baptist Church with Rev. Marcus Sheffield officiating. Interment will follow in the Coolidge Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be 5-7 p.m., Saturday, at Blair-Stubbs Funeral Home. Robert was born August 14, 1936 in Mexia, Texas to L. L. and Carriebelle Scarbrough Spencer. After graduating from Mexia High School in 1955, he received his Bachelor in Business from Sam Houston State University. Robert served his country in the U.S. Air Force Reserves. On August 23, 1958, Robert married Charlotte Ann Hance and they were blessed with two sons. Charlotte passed away on July 4, 1985. On April 13, 1986, Robert married Donna Sullivan. Robert began working at an early age delivering papers on a bicycle for the Mexia Daily News. He retired from Mutual of Omaha Insurance after 38 years as a sales representative. After being ordained as a deacon and minister; Robert served as minister of the First Baptist Church of Tehuacana, Prison Chaplain in Groesbeck and had a jail ministry at Limestone County Jail. He also served on the Coolidge School Board for many years. Robert had an outgoing personality, never met a stranger; he loved people and especially enjoyed joking with them. He played on the First Baptist Church softball team in Coolidge and later used his glove to play catch with his grandson, Zachary. Robert loved nothing more than serving God and spending time with the family he was so proud of. His hobbies consisted of working in the yard and back porch bird watching. Robert was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Mexia. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Charlotte Spencer; and brother, Jerry Samuel Spencer. Robert is survived by his wife, Donna Spencer of Mexia; sons, Stephen E. Spencer and wife, Donna of Robinson and Scott Spencer and wife, Cheri of Wortham; daughter, D’Ann Klosterman and husband, David of Mexia; grandchildren, Charlotte Lee Sanders and husband, Ray, Kelli Ann Toney and husband,Kelly; Anna Lara Spencer, Hance Rawlings Spencer, Zachary David Klosterman and Emalyn Claire Klosterman; sister, Jacquelyn Rogers and husband, LeRoy of Houston; and a number of cousins, including, Emmett and Judy Speer of Point Enterprise. Pallbearers will Bud Shamblin, Billy Poteet, Ben Gorden, Alan Goodrich, John Nabors and David Dolen. Honorary pallbearers will be members of his Sunday School Class.
