Sydonia Pearl Mackey

Sydonia Pearl Mackey, 89, of Groesbeck entered into rest June 24, 2017 in Farmersville, Texas. Visitation with the family will be from Noon to 1 PM, Friday, June 30, 2017 at Blair-Stubbs Chapel in Thornton, Texas, the service will follow at 1 PM with Pastor Ben David Watson officiating. Interment will follow in the Thornton Cemetery. Peter Jacinto, Logan Jacinto, Jeffery Jacinto, Chris Davalos, Jr, Sean Clifton and Michael Joseph Rodriquez will serve as pallbearers. Sydonia was born March 8, 1928 in Victoria, Texas to George Newton and Ellie Bradshaw Carroll. She grew up in the Groesbeck/Thornton area and was an active member of Victory Baptist Church in Groesbeck. During her lifetime, her working experience was in many areas. Her career began in Dallas delivering for Western Union, working for the old Parkland Hospital and as a butcher for Safeway. She and her husband, Henry, owned a service station in Flynn and she owned operated a Drive-In Grocery in Irving. Sydonia later worked in the Groesbeck Middle School Cafeteria, Brookshire’s Deli, Groesbeck Nursing Home kitchen and served as a caregiver in the Groesbeck area. She also cleaned house and chicken pens for her pastor, Brother Billy. Sydonia was a sweet, loving, caring person who never met a stranger. She was known as “Nanny” to her grandchildren and “Toni” to her friends; she had a large, loving family. During holidays, she prepared meals for her family and carried plates to those who were unable to cook. She was no stranger to hard work. Sydonia loved to quilt, cook, grow vegetables and fruit trees, especially out of the ordinary types, canning and raising chickens of all kinds. She once owned a 40 acre farm where she raised cattle, hogs, chickens and had a garden on one acre. She was a collector of many unusual things. She collected numerous talking clocks with neon lights, anything with roosters on it, salt and pepper shakers. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Henry Edward Mackey; sons, Tommy Suarez of Irving and Willie Suarez of Dallas; five sisters; and one brother. Sydonia is survived by loving daughters, Elaine Rawlinson of Thornton, Linda Suarez Rogers and husband, Jerry of McKinney and Rosa Jacinto of DeSoto; 10 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
