Dorothy D. Ott Obituary

Dorothy Dell Ganus Ott, 90, of Waco, passed away on April 23, 2021. Visitation will be 3 to 5 p.m., May 2nd at Oakcrest Funeral Home. The Rosary will be 9:30 a.m., May 3rd at St Louis Catholic Church, followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery. Dorothy was born in Waco, Texas on September 4, 1930 to Roy Elmer “Dell” and Rose Gertrude Dulock Ganus. She attended Sacred Heart Academy and graduated from Waco High School in 1947. While at Sacred Heart, Dorothy met Bernard Ott. They began dating in 1947 and were married at St. Mary’s Church in November 1951. She spent her life serving the Lord, her family, and the community. She enrolled in the Providence School of Nursing, the same school her mother attended in the 1920's. They were the only mother-daughter graduates from that school. Dorothy graduated in August 1951. Following graduation, she worked as an operating room supervisor prior to beginning her 25 year career as the Director of Nursing Service at the Family Practice Clinic, now known as Waco Family Medicine. She retired from that position in August 1995. During her time at the Clinic, Dorothy received the YWCA Pathfinder Award in 1995 for her 45 years contributing to the community through her nursing vocation. She was a member of the Board of Directors for the Heart of Texas Community Health Center for 10 years. Her legacy continues to this day as we have recently been reminded of the impact her life of service has had on others. Dorothy always put the needs of others before her own. Along with gardening, sewing, and needlepoint, she loved cooking, baking, and hosting large family gatherings, especially during the holidays. She loved being surrounded by family, especially her grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard Sr.; her infant twin sons; her sister, Betty Ganus Messner; and her brother, William (Bill) Ganus. She is survived by her six children, Bernard Ott, Jr. and wife, Cynthia of Waco, James Ott and wife, Margaret of Arlington, Rose Hutyra and husband, Jeff of Round Rock, Stephen Ott of Waco, Robert Ott and wife, Rachel of Houston, and Brian Ott and wife, Juli of Austin. Dorothy leaves behind eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews. Pallbearers are Andrew Ott, Christopher Ott, Christian Ott, Tyler Ott, Stephen Sparks, and Sam Moody. Honorary pallbearer is Bryce Ott. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Heart of Texas Community Health Center, 1600 Providence Drive, Waco, Texas, 76707. The family would like to thank the staff at St. Catherine’s Center, Visiting Angels, Community Healthcare of Texas-Providence Hospice, and Ascension Providence Hospital.
