Joseph E. Cameron Waco, Texas Obituary

Joseph E. Cameron

Joseph Elmer Cameron, age 64, passed away at home May 3, 2021 in Waco, Texas. Services will be held at 1:30 p.m., Thursday, May 13, at Lake Shore Drive Church of Christ, 2800 Lake Shore Drive, Waco Texas. Joe was born February 24, 1957 in Dallas, Texas, to his parents Bobbie Gay and Joseph Elmer Cameron, Sr. He attended school in Dallas and was a born sports-lover, spending much time in his early years with his Godfather, scrambling to Cowboy games and any baseball game they could find. Joe was himself quarterback, pitcher and basketball captain in his youth—a really great shortstop in his own right during mixed league games as an adult. For many years he coached children with spina bifida and worked as an event coordinator for the Muscular Dystrophy Association in the Houston area. Joe was a hard worker with a strong back and a calm will. In later years he lived in Olney, Texas, where he worked as a grocer and butcher, and became a favorite BBQ caterer for special events in the area. Engaged by the Christian atmosphere there, he was so moved to give his life to the Lord and became quickly a valued member of his church and community there. He is fondly remembered in that neck of the woods. In 2018 Joe moved to Waco, Texas, bringing a very recognizable similarity to Santa Clause, and discovering there that his love of children and his contagious smile were to be appreciated as he assumed the role in local gatherings and mall celebrations during the Christmas season. He looked forward each year to the crowds and his time as Santa! Joe’s approach in life was to stay humble but adventurous, to be helpful and instructive, sharing all he could at times to those in need of a big heart. He was always the life of the party and quick with an encouraging word or a hug. Joe was engaged most recently to Rebecca Martin of Waco, a life-long acquaintance, and is survived by his mother, Gay Diamond; his brother, Cordell Cameron; daughters Jennifer Freeman and Krista Pillow; his grandchildren, Reese Freeman, JT Freeman, Addison Freeman, and Hannah Pillow; and nephew Cordell Cameron Jr.; Joe joins his son, Ryan, truly missed, who passed away last August, 2020. We are uplifted that Joe is with the Lord he wished to emulate, and he will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him here.
