Eleanor Jan Johnson Smith, age 85, of Waxahachie, passed away Friday, June 21, 2019 at her home. She was born April 27, 1934 in Dallas, TX to Catherine (Jeannet) and Strother Y. Johnson. At age six, her parents took jobs working for the government in Washington, D.C. during World War II, where she attended grade school until the war was over. Her family moved back to Texas where she attended Stripling Junior High and Arlington Heights High School in Fort Worth. While attending high school she met and married Dewey Glenn Smith of Lancaster, TX on February 10, 1951 at Saint Mark’s Methodist Church in Fort Worth. They moved to Lancaster and started their family. While raising her first two children, Jan earned her high school diploma from The American High School of Correspondence in Chicago, IL. She centered her life around raising her family and supporting her husband in his floor covering business. While living in Lancaster, Jan and Glenn completed their family of four children. They were active members of the Lancaster Ave. Methodist Church in Dallas, where she held many offices in The Women’s Society of Christian Service and she and Glenn were Youth Directors. In 1966, the family moved to Waxahachie where they faithfully served at The First United Methodist Church. She held numerous offices in The Women’s Society of Christian Service, later known as United Methodist Women. She also taught Sunday School and was active with Vacation Bible School. She was a talented artist in oil paintings and a member of The Ellis County Art Association where she won many ribbons in art shows for her paintings. Jan loved God, her family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one son-in-law, Tony Wayne Little and one grandson, Jonathan Howard. Survivors include two sons, David Smith and his wife Pat of Waxahachie and Robin Smith of Euless; two daughters, Cindy Villarreal and husband Ernest and Susan Howard all of Waxahachie; grandchildren, Jessica (Gary) Ray, Daniel (Leah) Smith, Stephanie (Connor) Kuykendall, Mary Howard, Anthony Howard, Michelle (Jeramy) Hendrick and Steven Villarreal; great grandchildren, Isabella Errisuriz, Titiana Errisuriz, Fabin Villarreal, Emery Kuykendall, and great grandson due in August 2019, Madeline Villarreal, Mason Cooper and Baily Hendrick. Visitation for family and friends will be 2PM to 3PM Sunday, June 23,2019 at the First United Methodist Church. Funeral services will follow the visitation at 3PM at the First United Methodist Church with Val Stewart officiating. Interment will follow at Bells Chapel Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or The United Methodist Women at First United Methodist Church.
