David Orrick Obituary

David W. Orrick, 73, of Middlesex, VT, passed away on Saturday, October 19th, 2019 at UVM Medical Center. Born in Royal Tunbridge Wells, England, on December 10th, 1945, he was the eldest son of the late Peter and Stella (Tripp) Orrick. He grew up in Southampton, England, and received his Bachelor of Laws from the University of Southampton and his Master of Philosophy in Criminology from the University of Cambridge. He moved to the United States in 1969 to attend SUNY Albany, where he received his Masters and PhD in Criminal Justice. In Albany, he also met Sue Steinberg, whom he later married and with whom he shared his two children. In 1971, David moved to Vermont to work at the Vermont Supreme Court. He later transitioned to teaching Criminal Justice at Norwich University, followed by a decade lecturing at New Hampshire Technical Institute. David returned to Norwich in 2002 and remained there until his retirement in July 2019. Known simply as “Prof,” David adored teaching and was known for his loud ties, questionable fashion choices and British sensibility. In his recent years at Norwich, he extended his influence abroad, spending a semester teaching in China and guiding student programs to Tanzania, three trips to the Philippines and two trips to Haiti. Following his retirement, he enjoyed keeping up with students, staff and alumni as well as attending rugby games with his trusty camera. His hobbies included photography, motorsports, football (the real kind), traveling, volunteering as a board member of Our House and spending time with his family and friends. A devoted dad, you could frequently find him at the Wayside with his kids and relishing his new role as “Grandprof.” He is survived by his son, Michael Orrick, of Montpelier; his daughter, Sara Orrick, of Alexandria, VA; his granddaughter, Sadie Johnson, of Alexandria, VA; his brother, Tony Orrick, of Stirling, Ontario; his brother, Paul Orrick, of London, Ontario, in addition to countless students and university alumni who considered him a mentor, friend and father figure. A memorial service to celebrate David’s life will be held on Sunday, November 17th at 2:00 pm, in the White Memorial Chapel at Norwich University. Donations benefiting a memorial in David’s honor and written condolences may be sent in care of his children, Michael and Sara Orrick, at 9 Jordan St., Montpelier, VT 05602.
