Richard Stys

Essex Richard John Stys, 90 passed away at his home on Monday, October 28, 2019. Richard was born in Utica, New York on February 16, 1929 son of the late John and Veronica (Kulig) Stys. A very proud and private man, many people did not know he was a star athlete and scholar and was drafted by the Phillies for pitching. He was drafted by the US Army while attending college and pitched for them for 2 years while stationed in Germany. He married the love of his life, Roberta LaMonda in 1954 and after graduating from Clarkson College with a degree in mechanical engineering, worked for Alcoa, General Motors and then IBM in Vermont until his retirement in 1991. They raised 5 children in So. Burlington,VT , where he was a coach for Little League and Babe Ruth for many years and active in the Knights of Columbus. He was always supportive and proud of his children and grandchildren and went to almost every athletic event they were participating in (remember to give 110%!!) He was an avid golfer, bowler (ABC Senior Champion where he competed in Reno, Nevada) and an optimisticweekend fisherman- always looking for that perfect Vermont stream. A devoted Catholic, he took great comfort in his faith, especially at the end of his life. We will all miss his kindness, common sense and the twinkle in his eye when telling a good story. Richard is survived by his son Rick Stys and wife Tammy of North Carolina, four daughters, Renée Vanyush and husband Mark of Milton, Debra Mosher and fiancée George Abele of Burlington, Michele Webb and husband Kevin of Essex, Kathleen Dwyer and husband John of Williston, nine grandchildren Stacey Mosher & partner Robert O’Brien; Justin Mosher and wife Heather Goodenough; Collin Vanyush and wife Sarah; Anna (Vanyush) DeGraff and husband Javan; Sarah Webb and fiancée Brad Nutt; Nicholas Dwyer and wife Katelyn; Emma Dwyer; Victoria ( Stys ) Cairns and husband Jacob; Alexis (Stys) Burke and husband John ; three great grandchildren Annabel Cairns, Ethan Dwyer, Robert DeGraff and several nieces and nephews. Dad’s wish was to stay independent and in his home as long as he could and you all helped to make that happen for him. Per Richard’s wishes there will be no visiting hours held.
