Edward Von Sitas

Edward S. Von Sitas Essex Jct. Edward S. Von Sitas, 92 or "Doc", as he was known in town died peacefully at home with his family by his side on Friday, August 13, 2010. He was born in Bennington, VT on September 25, 1917 to Stephen and Celia Von Sitas. He was predeceased by his brother Gerald and both parents. Edward was raised and attended grammar school in Bennington, Vt. and St. Edmonds High School in Swanton. As an adult he attended St. Michaels College for a year to study for the priesthood. Although he did not finish his classmates said he still became a great father, although not through the church. On December 26,1942 he married his soul mate Phyllis Matteson of Arlington, Vt. From the first day of their lives together until his death Edward always referred to Phyllis as "my bride". They spent 68 years together as husband and wife and while sick, his only request was to have her hold his hand while he lay in bed. Doc became a pharmacist and owned Carroll's Pharmacy in Essex Junction for 20 years. He served his community in many ways and was always ready to help a child or animal in need. He was the town Health Officer for many years and was awarded for his efforts by the Secretary of State's office. He loved his time serving on the Fire Department, working as a Constable and Deputy Sheriff, being part of the The Lion's and working as a Scout Leader for many years. As a Constable he was recognized for his part in starting a drug recognition program and training others within the program. Doc's greatest joy in life was sitting with "his bride" next to him and listening to his family in the home while he napped in his favorite chair. The only question he had for his grandchildren and great grandchildren was "when are you coming back dear?" He loved to be surrounded by family while he napped and always considered himself blessed to have lived long enough to see his great grandchildren grow up. Edward is survived by his loving wife Phyllis, son Edward and partner Sharon Cleary, his daughter Sandra and her husband Edward Lacroix. His grandchildren include Kimberly Lavallee and husband Stephen, Kaaren Dagostino, Jennifer Lacroix and husband Franziskus Lapionka and Stephen Von Sitas and wife Katja. His great grandchildren include Stephanie and Monica Gardner, Nicholas and Timothy Zumbo and Kai Von Sitas. He also leaves behind Patti Lacroix who he always said "you are like a daughter to me darling". The family would like to thank Home Instead and the Pace Program for their outstanding support and help throughout. He was well known at Pace "with a million jokes to tell". Edward had one wish at the end, to die at home with his wife and family nearby. Due to the devotion of family and care and constant attention of his wife and daughter Sandra, he was able to spend the last four years of life at home. They provided continual care and support for him along with two caregivers, Judy Beaudry and Betsy MaGee Their loving support and care of Edward assisted in helping to make his stay at home possible. We would like to thank them for their many efforts throughout this process. Visiting hours will be held from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. on Sunday August 15, 2010 at A. W. Rich Funeral Home – Essex Chapel.
