Barbara McEnany

Barbara (Shapiro) McEnany Colchester Barbara (Shapiro) McEnany, 52, of Colchester was surrounded with love and beauty as she died on April 18, 2011 at Fletcher Allen Health Care. Her death marks the end of a 13-year courageous battle she fought with breast cancer. Barbara Yvette Shapiro was born in New York City on May 19, 1958 to Leonard and Gertrude Shapiro. She resided in West Hempstead, NY and attended the State University of New York at Buffalo. Barb moved to Vermont in 1979 and graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Hotel and Hospitality Management from the University of Vermont. She first managed, and then purchased a home furnishings store, “The Futon Gallery” on Church Street in Burlington, VT and expanded to include a clothing consignment shop, “Barb’s Big Boutique” when she moved the business to Winooski, VT. Barb then began a career in advertising where she worked as a sales representative for area newspapers. In 1983, Barb married Stuart “Rick” McEnany from Barre, VT. They purchased a home in Colchester, VT and Barb gave birth to their two children there. Despite eventually divorcing, Barb and Rick spoke frequently and shared a strong bond. He predeceased her in 2007. Barb was a passionate, kind and generous person. She was a fierce advocate for her children and had a creative flair that attracted many friends. Barb loved shopping and was gifted in being able to help others “pull outfits together” whether at fine department stores or local thrift shops. She had an amazing wit and dry sense of humor that would often have friends and family laughing until they cried. Barb loved to dance and dine out. She enjoyed taking road trips to visit out of state friends and family. Her battle with breast cancer was formidable and she always seemed to “bounce back” after setbacks, looking like the picture of health. Her tenacity and courage in fighting the disease was admirable and respected. Barbara is survived by her two children, Laurel Anne Shapiro-McEnany, 22 and Samuel Stuart Shapiro-McEnany, 20, of Colchester, VT; her brother, Russell Shapiro of Portland, ME and Essex, NY and his family; and her sister, brother-in-law, and nephew: Noreen Shapiro-Berry, Lawrence Berry and Elijah Berry of Westfield, VT. She is also survived by loving aunts and cousins and leaves behind many special friends who helped tremendously during the last phase of her life. There will be a service for friends and family on Saturday, April 23, 2011 at 11AM at the Essex Alliance Church on Old Stage Road in Essex Junction, VT with Pastor Joe Moore officiating. A pot luck luncheon at the church will immediately follow. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to an account established for her children’s benefit and managed by their Aunt, Noreen Shapiro-Berry, 340 Kennison Rd., Westfield, VT 05874.
