Charles R. Contois Williston - Charles Raymond Contois, 91, passed away on Friday, September 12, 2014 in the Green Mountain Nursing Home in Colchester, VT surrounded by his loving family. He was born on October 28, 1922 in Richford, Vermont, the only son of Ernest and Edith (Todd) Contois. He attended schools in Swanton and Richford. Charles was a proud member of the United States Army during World War II serving honorably during the occupation of Japan, in the Philippines and other Pacific Territories. Upon discharge, he returned home to Vermont and worked for Central Vermont Railroad throughout the State. On October 27, 1951 he married the love of his life, Claire Gagne, in Windsor, VT. After retiring from Central Vermont Railroad, Charles worked for many years in Security at the Shelburne Museum. He will be remembered for many things including his love of big band music, sharp political analysis and a voice that rolled low like distant thunder. Charles is survived by his beloved wife of almost 63 years, Claire of Williston; daughter Cheryl Graham of Littleton, NH, son Cary Contois and daughter-in-law Cindy of Binghamton, NY, daughter Cathy Hoeppner of Williston and son Colby Contois and wife Razelle of Jericho; grandchildren Shane Graham and wife Misty of North Carolina, Cody Contois of CT, Cara Contois-George and husband Eric of NY, Shanna Hill and husband Troy of Milton, Joshua Quebec of Colchester, Chrystie Sands of Essex, Cory Contois and wife Hayley of Huntington, Aaron Ritchie and wife Elizabeth of Williston, Charles Davis and wife Josephine Corichi of New Jersey and Emily Harris and husband Jonathan of Duxbury. He is also survived by 9 great-grandchildren Blaze, Khalil, Kade, Alexis, Connor, Evan, Adriana, Matthew and Camden. He also leaves his sister Phyllis C. Murray of St. Albans, VT. Charles was pre-deceased by his parents and two sisters Ernestine C. Harvey of Richford and Madeline Johnson of St. Albans. Per Charles’ wishes, there will be no visiting hours. A funeral service will be held at 11 am on Friday September 19, 2014 at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church on Route 2 in Williston. Inurnment will be private and at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make contributions to their local Humane Society, in Charles’ name.
