Daniel S. Mickel Jeffersonville Daniel (Dan) Scott Mickel, 78, passed away at his home in Jeffersonville, Vermont on Thursday, October 28, 2010. He was born in Cleveland, Ohio on April 13, 1932, son of the late Raymond and Ellen (Scott) Mickel. As a boy growing up in Hudson, Ohio, he was an Eagle Scout and graduated from the Western Reserve Academy with Honors in 1950. Dan graduated with Honors in Economics from the University of Rochester in 1954, where he was in the Navy ROTC and a member of the Alpha Delta Phi fraternity, and was elected to the Phi Beta Kappa honor society. After college Dan served his country as a proud member of the US Navy during the Korean War and, upon his discharge, married the former Mary Ellen Splitstone of Fremont, Michigan on July 28, 1956. They raised two children, Stephen Mickel and Carol (Mickel) Cadmus, in Ridgewood, New Jersey. Dan worked for many years in the executive search field and later in commercial real estate, partially retiring to Lake Placid, New York and marrying Margaret Blaisdell on January 7, 2006 in Cambridge, Vermont. Dan was a member of the Lion’s Club in Lake Placid, the VFW Cambridge, and the National Association of Realtors. He enjoyed reading financial papers such as The Wall Street Journal. He was an animal lover and liked to watch shows about nature and wildlife. Dan loved telling jokes and could often be found with a smile on his face and a merry look in his eyes. He was a hard worker, an honest businessman, and a warm and loving father; he will be missed by all who knew and loved him. He is survived by: His loving wife Margaret “Peggy” Mickel of Jeffersonville; His children: Stephen Mickel of Highland Park, Illinois; Carol Cadmus of Woodstock, New York; His grandchildren: Allison Mickel, Scott Mickel, and John Daniel Cadmus; Two stepsons, Todd Draper of Jeffersonville and John Draper of Morrisville; A stepdaughter, Jody Myott of Jeffersonville; Step-grandchildren Jonathan Draper and Allison Hughes of Johnson; His brother, John Mickel of Briarcliff Manor, New York; Numerous nieces and nephews; and The mother of his children, Mary Ellen Mickel of Battle Creek, Michigan Daniel was also predeceased by his brother David Mickel. There will be no public visiting hours. A memorial service with reception to follow will be held at the Second Congregational Church in Jeffersonville on Saturday, October 30, 2010 at 1:00 p.m. with the Reverend Lynda Hadley officiating. Inurnment will be private and at the convenience of the family. Memorial contributions in Daniel’s memory can be made to the Humane Society of the United States or the University of Rochester.
