Edwin McGovern Obituary

Edwin L. McGovern, Sr., 81, of South Burlington, VT, loving husband, father, and grandpa, passed away peacefully on January 23, 2015. Ed is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, Sheila P. McGovern; daughter Lynn Huggins and son-in-law Steve of Andover, MA; son Ed McGovern, Jr. and daughter-in-law Janice of Norwell, MA; and his three grandchildren, Danielle Huggins, Shane Huggins, and Lily McGovern. Ed proudly fought to protect his country as a 1st lieutenant in the US Army before embarking on a successful thirty year career in Human Resources with General Electric where he earned several managerial awards for outstanding service. A passionate enthusiast of many outdoor activities, including golf, skiing, biking and boating, Ed also loved woodworking, sports cars, and photography. Ed was especially interested in black and white photography and combined his hobbies to build a darkroom where he developed and printed his own film. He was an active volunteer for many organizations and served on the board of the American Red Cross. Ed played tennis competitively as an undergraduate at St. Peter’s University. After his post-graduate work at Seton Hall he continued to compete at a regional level for much of his life, winning many tournaments. Ed spent countless hours teaching and playing tennis with his family. Ed was a proud husband, father and grandfather and loved spending time with his children and grandchildren. His infectious smile and laugh, and his quiet, humble manner will be missed by everyone who was lucky enough to meet him. A private family service is scheduled. A celebration of Ed’s life is being planned for Spring/Summer. The family supports efforts to cure cancer, and in honor of Ed will participate in the Pan-Mass Challenge bike ride (www.PMC.org) in August. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to: Pan Mass Challenge, https://www2.pmc.org/donation.asp Rider name: Ed McGovern; PMC ID: 03101-1 Egift ID: EM0013 OR: The American Cancer Society, 55 Day Lane, Williston, VT 05495. The family also invites you to share your memories and condolences by visiting www.awrfh.com. “Blessed is the man to whom his work is a pleasure, by whom his friends are encouraged, with whom all are comfortable, in whom a clear conscience abides and through whom his children see God.” Ed McGovern, Sr., forever in our hearts. Rest in peace, Dee Dee. We love you.
