Elaine H. Arnold Enosburg Elaine (Hazen) Rogow Arnold, at age 96 passed peacefully on March 17, 2011 with family members by her side. She was the only daughter of the late Mabel (Langdell) and Oscar Hazen of North Hero, Vermont. Elaine is survived by her brother Arlington Hazen and his wife Nancy; and in-laws, Hazel (Hazen) Duffy, Jessie Hazen, Diane Hazen, Seymour and Mickey Rogow. She was also predeceased by her brothers, Gordon “Dick” Hazen, Reginald Hazen and John Hazen and in laws, Tobby (Rogow) Green and Hy Green. Elaine grew up on the Hazen Farm and left as a young woman to continue her education where she met her late husband Joseph Rogow. Both Elaine and Joe were aspiring actors and met off Broadway. As the story goes, she saw him on the stage and said, “That’s the man I am going to marry.” Her education included Connecticut School For The Blind where she lived with Uncle Gordon and Aunt Maude Hicks helping her to be exposed to life outside of Vermont and farming. She lived there for her teen years and graduated from Weaver High School. Elaine also attended a NYC acting school and graduated with an associate degree from The Champlain College of Vermont. Elaine gave up Hollywood dreams and married Joe. She became a young homemaker with two children, Sandra Tappan Spaudling and husband Harry of Kentucky, Richard H. Rogow and wife Priscilla (Pippi) of Enosburg, VT. She was the grandmother of 5 grandchildren: Suzanne Butterfield and husband Grant of St. Albans, VT, Heidi Tappan and husband Doug Nedde of Colchester, VT, Todd Rogow and wife Mila Plasvic of Falmouth, ME, Jennifer Edlund and husband August of St. Albans, VT and Maegan Garrett and husband Matt of Farifax VT. She also was a step grandmother to Hailey Chamberlain and husband Jesse of Huntington, MA, Justin Patras of Enosburg, VT and Joshua Rogow Laughlin who passed on before his loving Step Grandmother. Elaine was a great grandmother to 10 great grandchildren: Herrick, Brittany, Quinn, Brecken, Jaegar, Hans, Adrianna, Alexander, Eric, Charlie and 2 step great grandchildren Chloe and Jordan. The first Grandchildren, Suzanne and Heidi were enriched to have had several opportunities for great travels with their Loving grandmother. She had many nieces and nephews and numerous friends throughout the years. Elaine was a passionate woman who truly lived a full political activist life without running for office. She was an influence behind the scenes writing letters to key powerful individuals depending on the issue. She adored her horses and had a big heart for all animals. Elaine enjoyed exploring the world and traveled extensively throughout her life. She had a collection of artistic treasures from all over the world. Anyone who met Elaine was impacted by her presence; she was known! At 80, Elaine met her beloved second husband, James A. Arnold. They lived in Sarasota, FL for several years before moving to Vermont. Jim and Elaine found great pleasure in each other’s company and they were married for 16 years holding hands till the very end. Jim added to her family with his children Jim Arnold and wife Joanna of Connecticut and Sharyn (Arnold) Bell and Roland, along with their children and grandchildren. Elaine’s missing presence will continually be felt by all those who loved her. She will be remembered for her strong spirit and tremendous influence impacting our lives.
