Elizabeth “Bets”, “Betsy (Bennet) Burroughs Williston Elizabeth “Bets”, “Betsy” (Bennet) Burroughs, 86, died peacefully at her home early Sunday morning, November 25, 2012, after a fifteen year battle with ovarian cancer. A long-time resident of Essex Junction and later Williston, she was born in San Francisco on October 25, 1926 to the late Helen (Victors) and Richard Wilson Bennet. Growing up, she lived in Short Hills, New Jersey and St. Louis, Missouri. She enjoyed summers with her grandparents and aunts in Brookhaven, Long Island and later attended Camp Arcadie in Sandy Cove, Nova Scotia. Betsy was a 1944 graduate of John Burroughs School in St. Louis and a 1948 graduate of Vassar College, where she majored in mathematics. She married the late Dr. Ralph Burnaby Burroughs in 1951. They lived in Birmingham, Alabama for 12 years, where their five children were born. The family relocated to Dr. Burroughs’ home town of Swift Current, Saskatchewan in 1964. In 1965, Betsy and her children stayed in Digby, Nova Scotia with devoted friends from Camp Arcadie, the late Mrs. Helen Anthony and the late Miss Marjorie McCormick, before moving to Essex Junction in 1966. While completely engaged as a full time mother to her five children, she worked part-time at the UVM bookstore and then as a substitute teacher. She served as a Girl Scout leader and Cub Scout den mother. From 1974 to 1989, she taught math at the Laraway School in Johnson, a school for children in challenging family or academic circumstances. Her duties included canoeing, winter camping, and backpacking with the students. She was an accomplished knitter, an avid bridge player, and a dedicated rug hooker. She was a long-time member of the First Congregational Church in Essex Junction, serving for years as a deacon. Bets married Thomas D. Sachs, PhD., in 1988. Together, they enjoyed many years of summers in Sandy Cove and winters in Vermont. Dr. Sachs died in 2009. Elizabeth is survived by her five children, Anne Giordani (Bruno) of Ann Arbor, Michigan; Susan Burroughs (Thomas Soltis) of Simsbury, Connecticut; Margaret Burroughs of New York City; Barbara Burroughs (Joel Goldberg) of Shelburne; and Harold Burroughs (Ann) of St. Louis; and eleven grandchildren, Helen and James Giordani; Jennifer and Heather Soltis; Joseph and Benjamin Wlody; Eli and Rubin Goldberg; and Charles; Timothy; and Margaret (“Molly”) Burroughs. She was very proud of them all and her desire to see them grow up helped her through her prolonged illness. Betsy is also survived by her brother, Richard W. Bennet Jr., her cousins, Gloria Brown (Bob) and Barbara Duryea, her dear friend, Pat Everett (Al), and several nieces and nephews. Her devoted pets, Jodi and Croney, survive her as well. Elizabeth and her family wish to relay special thanks to Dr. Christopher Nunnick, as well as Margaret, Barbara, and rest of the thoughtful staff at the Vermont Center for Cancer Medicine, and Dr. Rose Colletti of the Cancer Patient Support Program of Vermont. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 28, 2012 at the First Congregational Church, 39 Main St, Essex Junction. Interment will be in Sandy Cove during the summer of 2013.
