Ian Lamphere

Ian Lamphere Crested Butte, CO/Underhill, VT Ian Lamphere, 35 died on Saturday, April 20, 2013 when he was caught in an avalanche while backcountry skiing as part of a fund raising event benefiting the Colorado Avalanche Information Center. Ian was a trained heli-ski guide and advocate of avalanche safety and awareness. Every man dies but not every man lives. He was born to Michael Lamphere and Georgiana Carr, May 2nd, 1977 in Burlington, VT. He was engaged to be married to Elizabeth Codevilla with whom he shared a beautiful baby girl, Madelyn Lamphere. Ian graduated from Mount Mansfield Union High School in 1995 and received Bachelor’s degrees in both math and english from The University of Vermont in 1999. Ian’s lengthy and impressive resume includes ski coach, english teacher, co-creator of Backcountry TV, vice president of Stockli Ski USA, and owner of Gecko Skins Climbing Skins N.A. He also co-founded the Stowe Mountain Film Festival which earned him the Volunteer of the Year Award from the Vermont Ski Museum. In addition to Ian’s many contributions to the ski industry, he also played drums as a founding member of the semi-successful regional touring rock band “Named By Strangers”. Ian was an avid skier and mountain biker and spent much of his time pursuing those interests all over the world. He carried with him an adventurous, humorous, charismatic and loving spirit. He will live on through everyone he inspired to live and love with all of their hearts. Ian is predeceased by his stepfather "Duff" Robitille and survived by his daughter, Madelyn; fiancee Elizabeth Codevilla; father and stepmother, Michael Lamphere and Willie Burbank; Mother Georgiana Carr; brothers, Bryan and Judson Lamphere; stepbrothers Chris and Paul Kayhart; as well as countless friends and family members. A memorial service will be held at the Trapp Family Lodge in Stowe, VT on May 4th at 2:00 pm followed by a reception.
