Kendrick Bellows Obituary

Rick Bellows passed away on February 15, 2016 at his home in South Hero, in the care of his loving family. He is survived by his wife, Barbara O'Reilly; his son, Kendrick III (Wendy); daughter, Catherine (Rebecca Wondergem), and granddaughter, Emily. He is also survived by his sister, Ann; brother, Tim (Marian Hull Nolan); brothers in law, Mark and Brian O'Reilly; and his loyal pets, Skye and Jinx. Rick was raised in Plainfield, NJ by his parents Kendrick F. Bellows and Sylvia Miller Bellows. He was a scholarship student at both Kent School, and Princeton University, where he was a member of the Cottage Club. Following college, Rick began nine years of proud service to the U.S. Marine Corps, first on active duty, then in the Reserve, retiring as a Major. While not his original intent, Rick's professional life was spent in the banking industry. He spent two decades at the Connecticut Bank and Trust Company, Hartford, CT, rising to the position of Executive Vice President. Subsequently, he was President and CEO of the Bank of Vermont, and finally, Liberty Bank, Middletown, CT. Much of the appeal of banking had to do with the power of an institution to do good works in the community. He created a culture that supported volunteer involvement for all employees, and was never one to lead from the rear. Rick headed United Way campaigns in both CT and Vermont; served as a director of the Northern VT Red Cross, the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS), Middlesex Chamber of Commerce, Windham Hospital, Middletown Foundation for the Arts, and many more. Some of his professional service included directorships of the Federal Home Loan Bank of Boston, the Connecticut and Vermont Bankers Associations, the National Commercial Lending School, and National Council of Savings Institutions. Rick was so much more than his work. He was a romantic, a prankster, and the kindest of friends. He was an avid tennis player for much of his life, a private pilot, a carpenter and an exceptional putterer. For thirty years, Cedar Island in South Hero was his joyful retreat. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, March 6, 1:00 PM at Camp Ta-Kum-Ta, 77 Sunset View Rd, South Hero, VT. Please dress casually, and with the weather in mind, as there will be a bit of walking required. The family asks that you visit www.awrfh.com for the service times and to share your memories and condolences.
