Leslie White

Leslie Somers White, 90, of Williston died Sunday July 10, 2016 following a brief illness. Born January 12, 1926, the only child of Dorothy (Somers) and Glen White in Barnet, VT. He attended Peacham Academy and graduated from St. Johnsbury Academy. Immediately following his graduation he proudly served his country during WWII in the 94th Infantry in Germany. After his honorable discharge, he returned home and attended and graduated from UVM in 1950. While serving in the army, he met the love of his life, Marjorie Dalgleish, in Edinburgh, Scotland. They were married in September, 1948, and had a wonderful marriage for almost 68 years. Leslie began his business career working for Ralston Purina in St. Johnsbury, then moved to Springfield, Newport, and Montpelier VT where he worked for the State of Vermont in the Department of Motor Vehicles, Department of Education, and retired from the Department of Mental Health. After his retirement, he spent endless hours volunteering as a tour guide for Vermont Transit and in the Dorothy Alling Library in Williston where he received volunteer of the year honors. He is survived by his wife Marjorie, three children Mary Manzi, Elizabeth Warren and James White and his wife Carol Mader. He is also survived by four grandsons, Major Cornelius Granai IV (Tad)and his wife Lindsey, and Robert Granai, Nicholas Warren and his wife Shannon and Brian Shelden; six great-grand children: Hannah, Lilah, Ava, Tyler, and Ella Granai and Garrett Warren. There are also five nieces in nephews in Australia along with many cousins. He was predeceased by his parents and one nephew, Stephen Haggerty of Australia. Services will be held at A. W. Rich Funeral Home, 57 Main Street, Essex Jct., VT, on Friday July 15 at 2 PM. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers please make donations to the Alzheimers Association, 300 Cornerstone Dr., Williston, VT 05495.
